Title: Ford’s cabinet if he won in 1976
Post by: darklordoftech on July 24, 2019, 02:59:40 PM
Would Rumsfeld remain Secretary of Defense and Bush CIA Director, and if so, for how long?

Probably. Rumsfeld as long as he wants. Ditto for Bush until he potentially steps down to run for President; alternatively, if Kissinger were to step down during a 2nd Ford term, Bush might make for a good replacement.

I have to imagine Potter Stewart, as well as perhaps Warren Burger or Lewis Powell, would retire under a second Ford term. It would be, in my opinion, very interesting to see if he nominated a woman, or perhaps Edward Brooke, or AG Levi, et cerera. Probably more so than a Ford second term Cabinet.

Stewart makes sense but I have to imagine Burger & Powell would just wait it out for the next GOP president (probably in 1989), considering when they all actually retired.

I think Rummy and Cheney stay at Defense and Chief of Staff respectively. As brucejoel99 said, I think Bush would be a good replacement (and have a good chance at getting confirmed) for Kissenger at State, as long as Rumsfeld doesn't sway Ford away from nominating Bush.

Rumsfeld was, at the time, not yet some chief conservative. Kissinger and Bush had great reputations with Ford, and, at the time, Cheney and Rumsfeld largely followed the Kissinger model under Ford.
