Title: "Describe X voter" thread
Post by: Caprice on June 19, 2018, 02:02:49 PM
I noticed that there were several threads in the vein of "Describe an Eisenhower-Kennedy-Goldwater-Humphrey-Schmitz voter" on this board, so I decided to make a thread for them.

In other news, describe an Eisenhower-Kennedy-Goldwater-Humphrey-Schmitz voter.

A deficit hawk who may well have voted for Ron Paul in 1988. Voted for Bush in 2000 as a "fresh face"; lost his job in 2004 and took it out on the GOP. Didn't trust Obama at first but thought he did a decent job. Didn't trust Hillary Clinton.

Gore - Kerry - McCain - Obama - Clinton

Interesting. Probably initially a white southern Dem who voted for Carter/Carter/Regan/Bush/Clinton/Clinton prior. Moderate.

Don't know why they voted for McCain? Maybe a little bit of racism?

Voting for Obama in 2012 and Hillary in 2016 tells me this person liberalized a lot and was disgusted by  Trump.

Bush 88/Bush 92/Clinton 96/Bush 00/Bush 04/Didn't vote in 08/Write-in 12/McMullin 16

McGovern-Carter-Reagan-Mondale-Dukakis-Clinton-Perot-Bush

A woman whose husband was drafted into Vietnam. She wanted him to come home, so she voted for the anti-War McGovern in 72. Became very angry with Nixon and the GOP for escalating it, so she voted for Carter in 76. Her husband died in the war, so she had to raise her children on her own. She blamed Carter for wrecking the economy and almost losing her home, so she votes for Reagan in 80. She gets laid off from her union job because of Reagan and votes for Mondale in 84. She perceives Bush Sr. as being no different from Reagan, who cost her her job so she votes for Dukakis in 88. In 92, she won't vote for Bush who screwed her over and votes for Clinton in 92. Things haven't gotten better for her. She isn't experiencing the economic boom that the rest of the country is. By now she's too old to get hired anywhere. She is fed up with the establishment and votes for Perot in 96. Now that she's nearing retirement age, she goes to Bush in 00.

Young, captivated by JFK's idealism in 1960.  Voted to "Let Us Continue" in 1964.  Liked Wallace's attacks on hippies in 1968.  Thought highly of McGovern more as a person than Nixon in 1972.  Knew Gerald Ford personally and so voted for him in 1976.  Was not fond of Reagan at all, so voted for Anderson in 1980 and then Mondale in 1984.  Stayed Democratic in '88 for Dukakis, found Bush too preppy.  Liked Perot's Texas charms in '92, but felt Bubba did good for the economy to re-elect him 4 years later.  Liked neither candidate in 2000 so went with Nader.  Voted against Bush in 2004 because of uneasiness with the war in Iraq.  In 2008, it was a close call but ultimately chose McCain because he just really liked the guy on late night TV shows.  Soured on Obama by 2012, so went with Romney.  He really did not like Trump so went with Hillary and Joe.

I'll go next:

1956: Eisenhower (age 27)

Moderate Cold War Democrat, pro-intervention but pragmatic. Voted for Nixon in 68 because he thought his Vietnam policy would be better then Johnson’s and he’d bring the war to a responsible conclusion and voted for him again in 72 thinking he’d followed through. Stick with Carter in 80 thinking that he’d followed through. Went with Reagan in 84 because he’d landed a good job and liked his tax cut. Began voting straight democrat again in 92 with the Cold War no longer an issue and had begun to sour on Reaganomics by that time.
