But Clinton considerably narrowed the gap, as he won over suburban whites who had previously voted GOP because of the Democrats' weakness on taxes, crime, and foreign policy. In 1988 HW Bush won Fairfax by 22.8 points. In 1992 he won it by just 2.7 points, Dole won it by 1.6 points, and W Bush in 2000 won it by 1.4 points. In 2004 the dam officially burst, with Kerry winning Fairfax by 7.4 points. It goes without saying that Obama and Clinton did far better, and there are no signs that Fairfax will go to the GOP anytime soon.
