Title: Which would be most impressive for a Republican?
Post by: Arbitrage1980 on November 18, 2017, 04:08:31 PM
Let's limit this to a generic Republican, not necessarily Trump. Also, let's assume the GOP nominee is not from any of these states, in order to take away the hometown impact.

Obviously losing California by less than 5%.

California is 27% foreign born, only 37% white, and has nearly half its population speaking a language besides English at home. A republican staying within 10 points there would require a GOP landslide nationally.

W Bush lost CA by 9.96% in 2004. Has CA demographics changed that drastically since then?

No, but the Republican Party has. It's went from conservative hero Reagan giving amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants to candidate Trump calling for deporting every single person who is here illegaly. The GOP of Reagan and Bush is dead, and thus, so are its chances of ever competing in California.

Reagan came to regret granting amnesty. His reason for doing so in the first place were mainly geopolitical: he was afraid that if the illegals returned to Mexico, they would vote in a communist government into power.

The GOP is the party of law and order. The notion that we have to pander to Democrats who believe that those who break our laws to enter our country illegally should be rewarded with not just government benefits but also U.S. citizenship, is pretty ridiculous. Thankfully, we now have a President who enforces our immigration laws.

Law and order is largely a dog whistle anyway. Just ask Nixon or George Wallace (although you can't since they're both dead).
