Title: Reader's Poll: Secession
Post by: Türkisblau on October 16, 2015, 12:07:35 PM
This is a supplemental poll to Wednesday's special report (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=220901.msg4760390#msg4760390) on voting on secession in the ConCon

Absolutely - supporting this doesn't mean you support secession. It merely means you believe in structure and having procedures in place.

Yes, but support should be very high.

This pretty much. 50%+1 support shouldn't be enough as some high-profile referenda have made it, but if a super-majority of the people support secession then they should be allowed to go through with it.

I support anyone's right to secede but I also support the governments right to enforce its borders. If we're to have a legitimate federal government then this notion of an orderly secession where region A just decides to leave without any ramifications and the federal government has to right to enforce its borders is ridiculous.

Same here, definitely don't want a repeat of TNF's shenanigans.

Of course. This is a game, and if you have enough people in a region who feel that necessary reforms, even if they are minor, are impossible, then they should have a clear pathway to split off. Or, they may want what actually happens in their region to take on greater importance.

Generally, as a matter of principle, I would say no.

But if the threshold is set at a very high level so secession would not be something that would be latched onto on a whim by someone or by a group with nothing better to do than disrupt the game, then even I would seriously consider a mechanism for secession, but a mechanism that must reach high standards.

After all, when you are talking about dismantling the nation, the threshold must be high.

Secession should be constitutionally banned.

Yes (not a statist, sane).

Government by the people, for the people > lines on a map.
