To answer your question, sir, I would disagree with the assertion that I've ever supported amnesty. I support a pathway to legal status that includes paying fines for breaking the law, learning English, working, not reserving government benefits, and learning to integrate. After maintaining legal status for a period of time, they'll be eligible to apply for citizenship. That's not amnesty. That's just common sense. They pay for breaking the law. They can work, pay taxes, and contribute to their country-to-be.  Their families don't have to worry about staying in the shadows. That's just common sense.

As you know, my campaign is really zeroing in on making sure this country is doing everything it can to ensure a bright future for this country and especially for our children. While some may disagree, I believe that common core standards are part of that future and I support the initiative taken in my state to adopt those standards. Ensuring a top notch education for our children countrywide is something I am sure all of us can get on board for, and Common Core is an important cog in achieving that. Of course, just adopting these standards isn't the panacea for everything wrong in our education system. To address other concerns, a broader reform for education is needed and will be one of my top priorities in the Oval Office. Visions for this reform include having the Federal Deperatment of Education help expand school choice  through grants and streamlining teacher evaluation standards nationwide. That though, doesn't even touch on my hopes for helping those in post secondary education.

Martinez on immigration reform during Winchester, Town Hall:

Immigration has been and always will be a vital part of this country's prosperity, that can not be disputed. While it is imperative for this country's economy to open our arms to immigrants, it also has to be done in an orderly and regulated fashion. Many do come to this country in that orderly fashion but many others do not. Before we consider anything else, our borders must be secure to halt the influx of undocumented immigrants. From there, we can consider what to do with those immigrants who have come to this country improperly. This must be done through cooperation with congress, not unilateral executive action. President Obama's unconstitutional Executive Order issued last year must be rolled back and replaced with a comprehensive plan, because as of right now his decision more or less grants legal status to those who came to this country in defiance of the law without ensuring the law is enforced to prevent that from happening further.

 A lot of folks will tell ya a lot of hooplah about their plans to do this that and the other during their time in office. Let me tell ya though, four years... even eight isn't quite a lot of time to finish all the wonderful stuff we'd love to start. So my main focus on the domestic front will focus on three main ideas for success in the country's future. Four years isn't a lot of time but putting in policies that will stay put for several decades will be the cornerstone of looking to the future. When I was training to become a Navy SEAL, all the students were broken down into boat crews. Seven students in a crew - three on each side, and one coxswain to help guide. Every day, you and your crew would form up on the beach and have to get through the surfzone and paddle several miles down the coast. The surf off San Diego can get to be 8 to 10 feet high - it's exceedingly difficult to paddle through unless everyone digs in. Every paddle must be synchronized to the stroke count of the coxswain.  Everyone must exert equal effort or the boat will turn against the wave and be unceremoniously back on the beach. For the boat to make it to its destination, everyone must paddle.

That's the approach I plan to take when making decisions as President. To get from where we are now to where we want to be will take help. Nobody got to where they are now without the help of a friend, a colleague, or even the kindness of a total stranger. Everyone successful in this country had someone in their life - a teacher, a parent, a priest, someone - serve as a good coxswain to guide them. As President, I want to make it so everyone has that opportunity, because a lot of kids in this country don't get the opportunity to find those crewmates and find that coxswain. I plan to invest heavily in education, working to strengthen our schools, so that everyone has a shot at success. Making community college free for all students is something the President originally proposed, and is something that would ensure all students have that opportunity - and it's still fiscally responsible! The cost of making community college free for the next ten years is only around 1% of what we spent on the Iraq War; and ultimately, because those students go on to higher-earning jobs and help encourage businesses to come to America instead of locating somewhere else, it could be a money-maker in the long run. Ensuring everyone has a chance at success - a fair playing field, not forcing everyone to end up the same but at least making sure everyone has an equal shot - is something I learned the importance of while serving in the military, and it's something I aim to promote as President.

During this week, Admiral McRaven will be knocking on doors, speaking to community groups, attending religious services, and dining at local restaurants throughout the Manchester area.

(OOC: Gonna be putting a lot more detail into speeches than schedules - that's both personal preference (speechwriting is fun & detailed lists of towns in podunk Iowa aren't) and a game thing (more of a focus on developing a real campaign through speeches and discussion of issues rather than just traveling to events)).

Now I've heard candidates on both sides say we need to be off Middle Eastern Oil. They're half right. We need to be off oil, coal and all other fossil fuels, no matter where they come from in order for any being to survive into the future. Usually, when someone is determined to cheat, there's usually no stopping them, but I'm amazed that John Ashcroft, Alberto Gonzalez, Michael Mukasey, and Eric Holder didn't consider bringing charges against the players for steroid possession, which is illegal-or the owners who covered it up, which could have been considered Obstruction of Justice.

Do believe the NCAA is in the right, protecting Amateurism of their student-athletes?

No, and I'm not sure why we are using the term student-athlete, given that almost every school, these people are athletes first. While they probably shouldn't be making as much as a professional, you can call them a semi-pro, and as such they should be making, at the least, the minimum wage in their state per game-plus room and board.

I find it interesting Governor Bush feels the need to go on the attack so early, attacks which only serve to escalate the tension in the Republican Primaries and divide the party. Overly negative attacks cost us the elections in 2008 and 2012, and I am shocked Jeb would decide to criticize the records of one of the other candidates in the race when the real opponents this November are the Democrats, but perhaps it shows he's willing to say anything if it means a chance at the White House.

These attacks show Jeb is not the change the party needs, but a memory of our history. Just as he uses old campaign tactics he also carries the name of an American political dynasty which has had, according to Barbara Bush, "enough presidents". We do not need another Bush in Washington, especially one which has been out of office for many years, but someone with fresh experience on the job and who understands the issues real, everyday Americans face.

No longer can this conceivably go on. I really don’t have to mention how sick and tired all of us are with how nothing gets done in D.C thanks to Harry Reid and his caucus of partisans and a veto happy President ready to smack down any bi-partisan measures which slip past Congress. The culture of politics needs to change now, as our work is lauded as nothing more than a punch line these days. This country needs a new direction for its future soon and there is only one candidate that can veer us away from the path we are on now, and I think you all know who that is. We don’t need recycled policies and faces familiar with from administrations passed nor do we need another Barack Obama, an inexperienced legislator. This country is craving a true, strong, conservative leader to finally, after almost 16 years, into the millennia. That doesn’t happen with strolling about and lolly gagging, that happens when we put our heads down and churns out results. That’s what you will get when we get ourselves to the White House in 2016!

I think too many people tend to forget in these early stages that there are 50 states in this country we all call home, not just the the great state of Iowa. A new way is to change things up, do the things most people may not expect one of those cookie cutter politicians do as a knee jerk reflex. Conservative policies work, we just need a candidate who can show how they serve as a gateway to pushing this country back to the pinnacle of progress in this world, where it belongs. If we want something new, something different it starts with moving away from dynastic politics and strikingly similar ideas to innovative, conservative, answers to our ills and improvements upon the policies which have already proven to work well and should continue to work.

QUESTION: Senator, how do you feel about the recent passage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal?

BALDWIN: Well, I wasn't able to be very vocal about it right when it passed as I was ill, but make no mistake: this is a terrible deal. It's a terrible deal for workers, for the environment, for farmers, for almost everyone except the corporate bigwigs profiting off of it. Any deal negotiated in backrooms and hidden from the public eye so quietly as this one is bound to be harmful to the little guy, plain and simple.

QUESTION: Senator, you've said previously that you support expanding Social Security. Isn't it dangerous to meander around the significant problem of a broken entitlements system?

BALDWIN: Well, when I talk about my plan to expand Social Security, all I'm talking about is eliminating the cap on the payroll tax, which keeps those with incomes of over $250 grand from paying the same share into the system as everybody else. By doing this, we can keep Social Security solvent for at least the next four or five decades, while at the same time increasing benefits for seniors who have earned them. It's the fiscally and morally responsible thing to do.

The reality is the Iranians have listened to everything we've said to this point... But I'd feel more comfortable if a final deal had their energy being produced outside of Iran... I understand there are nice spots in Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan or Armenia to use if the Iranians wished to negotiate with them.

Really, it's a shame that we've barely heard an utterance on what is clearly a monumental challenge to this country today. There has been a clear air of indifference during this campaign so far how we can final curtail this country's outrageous spending habits. Washington would love nothing more than for us to forget, that while they've sworn up and down to  finally get our finances in order, they've done nothing but continue to vote for the status quo of unsustainable deficits. President Obama hasn't helped either with his unbalanced fairy land budgets doing nothing but increasing the tax burden on hard working Americans. He's doing it not to bring our spending under control though, only to find a way to pay for more unwieldy and inefficient government programs. A budget that is balanced and fair to all citizens of this country is something that I have already begun discussing with the best economic minds in this country and is something which I hope to submit to congress upon reaching the oval office. Mark my words, the only unbalanced budget I might propose will be one where we take in more than we pay out.

Any plan for the United States with an eye on the future involves charting out a comprehensive approach to satiating its ever growing energy needs. Like many others, I believe fully in a diverse array of options to get that done. Our first step is finally opening up new areas for drilling here in the United States and off our shores to ensure great energy independence. The Obama administration has already demonstrated its indifference to his former goal with his inaction on the Keystone XL Pipeline and his inconsistent policy towards offshore drilling. You won’t get anything but decisiveness from a Martinez administration as we seek to keep prices at the pump low and our dependence on foreign energy at a minimum. That of course, does entail investment in all energy sources including wind, solar, nuclear and hydroelectric to help diversify our energy portfolio. Like any smart investor, we can’t afford to put all of our eggs in one basket. What goes with that though, is proper management to avoid money sinks like Solyndra and instead supporting companies that have demonstrated fiscal responsibility and a vision for their energy program.

Brown - "I'll give you one thing - I'm not as spry as I used to be. But let me tell, with age I've gotten even more vigilant about the issues I care about. And that's the bottom line of this race. It's not about who is the youngest hot shot who can slick talk their way to the White House, it's about real knowledge on the concrete issues that face America, a strong background in solving some of those issues, and a good moral character that sets yourself as a role model for this country, and I believe possess all three."

Reporter - "Well let's get to those issues then, Governor. One of the issues is immigration. Do you agree with Presidents executive action on immigration, and would've you gone even farther, or done less?"

Brown - "I agree with the President, but if you ask me, he hasn't used the bully pulpit enough to fight for true immigration reform. My plan, which I think would fix all of the problems our current system has, is to grant a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who are currently here. The crux of the problem that is left, the fact that we will still have people coming in in this manner, is one of incentive rather than one of a lack of border security. And those incentives come from one area - businesses. Now I don't want to over-regulate businesses, but in order to make sure those who have put forward their effort to come to this country legally, we must crack down on companies that hire illegal immigrants. Now we can tighten that enforcement in a couple of ways, but one way is streamlining the farm subsidy program and calling for harsher restrictions on companies that take advantage of workers. Another is limiting these EB5 programs that intend for good but ultimately leave us with a lot of workers who are in pilot programs that are being taken advantage of. I want everyone in America to be playing by the same rules, so that we get the best possible outcomes for everyone. That is my plan."

Reporter - "And finally, William McRaven gave you a scalding comeback to your press conference on the TPP agreement. What do you say to Admiral McRaven and do you stand by your position on this issue?"

Brown - "Admiral McRaven has served this country admirably, and I respect his service to this country. That being said, I feel he glorifies this agreement without getting down to the thick of it. On privacy, on banking regulation, on big pharma, it's a giveaway to everything the biggest companies want, while promising bigger wages and more jobs later. We saw with NAFTA and plenty of other of the trade agreements we've made - the jobs don't come, and certainly the wages will decrease. The American worker faces enough problems without this added on to it."

Speech in Beaufort, SC on military readiness

Now, I know that, in the Democratic primary, what you most want to hear is which one of us is the best leader of the Democratic Party - who among us has the message and leadership to lead us in Virginia. And I’ll be talking about that too, but before I do, I’d like to address an ad that Governor Bush, on the Republican side, has been running in several early states. I know you’ve seen it - he’s talking about the ‘promises of America’. Specifically, in that ad, he claims that President Obama has jeopardized this nation’s security by being a weak commander-in-chief. And, folks, that’s a load of bull.

That’s the advantage I have over anyone on the Democratic side of the aisle - when a Republican candidate says something so ludicrous as claiming that Obama has jeopardized national security, I can stand there on the debate stage and say, “As an Admiral of the United States Navy, I know a fair bit more about our military readiness than someone who hasn’t been in any sort of elected office for a decade, and I know that Obama has been a perfectly fine leader for our military - because I was there.” I was honored this week to be endorsed by Governor Mike Beebe of Arkansas, Governor Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania, and Senator Jim Webb of Virginia - all three served in the armed forces, Senator Webb serving as Ronald Reagan’s Navy Secretary, and they’re standing with me because they know what Jeb’s saying just isn’t true, that the Democratic Party stands for a strong national defense. And it’s true, isn’t it? Ask yourself: is the United States safer than it was eight years ago? Well, there’s a whole host of foreign policy achievements of this administration - normalizing relations with Cuba, reforms in Myanmar - and obviously Secretary Kerry and Secretary Clinton had a hand in both of them. But the one I was involved in, and the one I think is the biggest accomplishment of this administration, is that we finally killed Osama bin Laden. This administration is the one that resulted in the death of the man responsible for 9/11. It’s difficult to think of a more impactful military success.

But back to the bigger point, the US military is not weak. Obama has not endangered American national security. We spend more than the next dozen or so countries combined. In terms of military equipment, we have around ten times what the Chinese have. There’s actually no historical precedent for a nation with the size of our nation being allied with so many of the world’s largest economies. Over 40% of the world’s economy is controlled by just five nations - us, Japan, Germany, France, and the UK. That’s us and four of our closest allies, coming close to controlling half the world’s GDP. That’s pretty damn impressive. Our navy, in terms of fleet tonnage, is larger than the next thirteen largest navies combined - and also controls the second-largest air force in the world, second only to the United States Air Force. The fifth-most-powerful air force, incidentally, would be a single American aircraft carrier. And we’ve got eleven. The M1 Abrams tank has seen more combat than just about any other tank on the battlefield, and has never - ever! - been completely disabled by enemy fire. China has around 500 of their tanks - sounds scary, right? But theirs aren’t as good as ours, and they have 500? We’ve got over 8,000. There’s 8,400 attack helicopters in the world, and we own 6,400 of them. Any nation attempting to fight us in a conventional war would be like a toddler trying to fight Muhammad Ali - they’re just not going to win. And, speaking as a retired Admiral, that’s just the stuff they tell you about.

So, then, what will I do to the military budget? Well, I’m no Bernie Sanders or anything - I’m not going to cut it to the bone. As President, I will maintain a US military capable of addressing any possible threat. But it’s true that our military budget is outdated, and personally, I blame a lot of that on Congress. They regularly give the military more money than we actually request, to pay for pet projects in their districts. Fact is, we can safely reduce the military budget, actually increasing it in some areas, and save billions while still maintaining our status in the world. A destroyer with an Aegis missile defense system can fight just as well as a Littoral Combat Ship or an old cruiser, for example, but it’s a hell of a lot cheaper. We don’t need as many F-35s as we’re buying, either, since that money could be spent investing in new UAVs or improving FA-18s. We can reduce our end strengths too, since we don’t need as many ground forces anymore with Afghanistan over - that’s money that can be redirected to invest in more special forces, as well as investing in breakthrough technologies. There’s a report out by David Barno, he’s a Lt. Gen., that explains how we can do this and save hundreds of billions without really impacting how our forces are performing at all.

We face a new reality in the 21st century, and we need to adapt to that reality. We’re not going to be fighting a tank battle in Europe, and we’re not going to have any major air superiority battles either. No American soldier has been killed on the ground by an enemy aircraft since 1953. What we need to do in terms of our military spending is shrink the things we don’t need and won’t use anyway, the stuff that’s just being kept around to help Congressmen get re-elected. We can reduce that, save some money, and reinvest the rest in the stuff that we really do need, which is more special forces and new technologies. We need a strong national defense, but the way we do that isn’t just by throwing money at anything that moves - it’s through making smart choices, that preserve both our national and our financial security.


Speech in Des Moines, Iowa on energy security

Energy is an issue near and dear to my heart, because when you get down to it, it’s a national security issue too. Secretary Clinton and I have been talking about this recently, whether we need to pursue fossil fuels or renewable energies right now. In light of that, I’d like to speak more on my plan for our nation’s energy supply and what we’ll do.

In the long term, it’s necessary to pursue renewable energies, and as President I plan to support efforts to increase our renewable power usage. My inspiration for this sort of plan is Japan - Japan used to be totally dependent on imported oil, and some historians actually speculate that a big pressure that forced Japan into World War II was a need for more oil sources. But they started using more gas, more nuclear power, and invested really heavily into mass transit, and they’re now incredibly energy secure. Not only does having diverse energy sources reduce the impact of the loss of any single one on our nation, but using energy sources like geothermal and ethanol and wind and solar also means that power is coming from multiple diverse sources, essentially reducing to zero the risk any attack on our energy grid would pose. Energy gets more diverse in its points of generation, which means that even if one gets knocked out in a natural disaster then you can more easily get power. And hey - I didn’t even mention global warming in that! Renewable energy is the right thing to do for the climate, but more importantly, it’s the right choice for a secure energy supply.

But what we also need is an all of the above energy supply, and that necessitates exploring our own domestic fossil fuel resources. Oil, as we’ve all experienced, is vulnerable to price shifts based on a number of factors, most of which aren’t under our control. That sort of economic uncertainty isn’t good - but increasing global supply by pumping up our domestic production not just means we’ll be less vulnerable to a total end of supply like we saw in 1973, but also means prices will be more stable. It’s simple supply and demand - with more diverse suppliers, the impact of any one supplier is reduced. So when we develop our oil supplies, what we’re saying to the American people is that your gas will not just be cheaper, it’ll be more likely to stay that way. Natural gas is the same way, with the additional bonus that it can be exported to nations in Europe to help reduce their dependence on Russian gas.

My energy policy is ultimately a pretty fair solution, in that it’s fair to all the options. We should invest heavily in renewables, absolutely. We should also consider developing our fossil fuel resources, because they’re a valuable resource as well. We have several options - and pursuing all of them is what we need to do if we want to see the benefits that all of those options can provide.

Other States: While Senator Graham's operation is small, plans are being made to expand to more early states so a truly national operation is ready by the time the primaries begin. President Obama certainly hasn't done the best job with the situation, but we should bear in mind that this could be a lot worse. While ISIS has launched major attacks across the Middle East, and control large swaths of Iraqi and Syrian territory, they haven't been able to launch organized attacks against the west. This of course, does not mean they aren't a threat to us, as we've had significant numbers of people caught leaving for the battlegrounds in Syria and Iraq, raising the danger of "lone wolf" attacks. To solve this, we need to ban travel in any form to Iraq and Syria, to build a group of allies that support us, and doesn't make it look like we're doing all the work, and to prevent Americans and other westerners involved with ISIS from returning to their countries of origin.

When you have two leaders who disagree with each other on everything, like President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu or Chancellor Merkel or Prime Minister Tsipiras, relations are usually going to be strained. There's not much that can be done about that. As for negotiating with the Palestinians, as much I, or anyone else would like to a two state solution. the reality is that everything the Palestinians have done since 1948 have shown they don't want peace, they want to wipe Israel off the earth, and it's amazing that the Israelis have not responded in kind.

I most certainly do support an increase in the Federal minimum wage, and my personal opinion is it should match the average of all state minimum wages and be chained to inflation when it goes up. The problem is, with a GOP Congress passing a minimum wage increase is going to be impossible. Still we can remedy that, which is why I call on voters to elect to a Democrat to the White House, and to flip both the House and the Senate, which will be difficult, but doable, and so worth it for things like this.

President Obama did abuse the Executive Powers of his office to deal with immigration, but what was he supposed do? He was dealing with a hot-button issue that no one has even tried to touch in almost a decade, and a Republican Caucus that hates him for existing. As for the order itself, it's an excellent framework, but people need to keep in mind Mexico is not the only country our undocumented immigrants come from-this is a community which spans the globe.

What will you do as president to combat ISIS and other terrorist groups? Do you agree with how the Obama administration has handled this issue? ISIS has largely been contained within the Middle East, thanks to President Obama's policies. He has done the best he can to combat ISIS and terrorism as a whole. America has been safer than ever under President Obama and I stand by the President in his efforts. That said, as President, I will lead America down a different path with respect to combating terrorism. Any action taken cannot be taken unilaterally. As we learned with the War in Iraq, any action must be taken with a strong, unified coalition.

In recent years, relations between the US and Israel have become more strained. What would you do to improve relations and also resolve the dispute between the Israelis and the Palestinians? I stand very strongly with our friends in Israel. President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu simply do not have a strong personal relationship. I believe that the Prime Minister and I are much closer than he and the President are. As for the issue of Palestine and Israel - if the Palestinians continue to resort to terror and extremism they will never have an independent state.

Voters overwhelmingly favor an increase in the minimum wage, and multiple states have taken action on this. Do you favor increasing the minimum wage, and if so, by how much? I have always supported raising the minimum wage to a livable wage. This is a position that has been approved by voters across the nation on many occasions. I support raising the minimum wage to $17 per hour for untipped workers, and $5.25 for tipped workers. It's time to let all Americans make a reasonable living.

Do you agree with President Obama's executive order last year on immigration? What is your plan to reform the country's immigration system? I believe, out of respect for the current administration, it would be rude for me to comment on the President's Executive Order. I will comment that his hand was forced by Congressional Republicans and their obstruction of any legitimate immigration reform. As President, I will work for a Middle-of-the-Road solution that strengthens our border, makes the citizenship process easier and more streamlined, and protects the children that were brought to this nation by their parents.

Out of all the other people on this stage, who would you most want to have in your Cabinet, and for what position? There are many qualified men and women on this stage who would capably serve in a Kerry administration. Secretary Kerry where did you learn to do Math? If you combine the average of what all the states that have a minimum wage do, cut that in half, and chain it to increases in inflation, I guarantee that you will higher minimum wage then what the Federal minimum wage is now. 1. At present the fight against ISIS is being misunderstood. Boots on the ground isn't going to work. Dropping more bombs isn't going to work. And I can tell you right now that giving them jobs isn't going to work either. A strong America begins at home, and to prevent an ISIS inspired attack on our shores, I suggest we secure our own border, end the drone campaign that is killing hundreds of Iraqi civilians and feeding ISIS propaganda, and most importantly, do not risk our own men and women. We need to focus on containing ISIS, which is lot easier than doing the impossible mission of destroying them.

2. We need a two state solution. Benjamin Netanyahu isn't interested in a two state solution, and President Obama sure as hell isn't interested in even listening to Benjamin Netanyahu. As President, I will work harder to bring an end to Israel's divisive settlement policy and instead encourage constructive dialogue between the two nations. It might be bitter medicine for Netanyahu to swallow, but if he wants peace, he ought to at least come to the table.

3. If the states want to raise the minimum wage, let them! But the federal minimum wage is a costly cancer on our economy that forces the hands of several states. Each state should be able to set a minimum wage that their economy can sustain. I personally support, on a state level, the minimum wage being raised to ten dollars an hour. But I will not dictate from the White House what Arkansas can do and what California can't do.

4. No! No! No! President Obama has shown a clear disregard for the constitution and the rule of law by signing that dreadful order. On day one, I will repeal it, and will work with Congress to propose an immigration reform package that allows for more immigrants to legally come and work in the United States while making sure that those already here illegally will never, ever, become citizens!

5. Party unity is important, and everyone on this stage would make a fine running mate or cabinet secretary. In particular, I like Governor Walker's aggressive stance against the control of his state by the corrupt labor authorities, and I think he'd make a fine Secretary of Labor. But we cannot be cannibalizing each other like the Democrats are. I have run a positive campaign, because frankly, I don't want to end up like Hillary Clinton on the Democratic side of the campaign. The Democrats are bleeding votes, and the Republicans ought to smell the blood in the water and try and win over those votes with a positive message about how we intend to make America into America once again!

Well, VP Quayle, I served as Chairman of the House Budget Committee from 1995 to 2001. During that time, I was the main architect of the Balanced Budget of 1997, which saw our Budget go from a deficit of -$163 billion to a surplus of $236 billion. As Governor of Ohio, I have fully eliminated our budget deficit, as well as lower our unemployment rate.

There is no one answer for 'stopping terror' - Lord knows we've been fighting a war on it for a decade and a half now. What Obama's been doing is giving some support to the Kurds, pressing for political reforms in Baghdad, and launching some airstrikes - and he's right, those are necessary things to do to stop ISIS - but it's not enough. They've got support of Sunni tribal leaders and the Sunni people who have been treated brutally by the Shi'a government of Iraq, and we need a way to counteract that. Some candidates have called for 'boots on the ground', and I think they're correct, just not our boots. We need strong leadership in Iraq, bolstered by the political and financial leadership of nations like Egypt and Saudi Arabia - maybe even Iran and Turkey - to defeat ISIS. We can't go in and beat them ourselves, we need local and regional partners to do that. We should offer our financial and political backing to those nations that will help rebuild Iraq and Syria, organize a diplomatic partnership to engage with all regional powers. We have highly skilled special operations forces who are capable of targeting high-level ISIS organizers - once we take out their leadership and heavy equipment, then we can turn to Turkey or the Free Syrian Army or Sunni tribes, but above all we should prepare now for nation-building. When candidates are up here talking about how they'll fight ISIS, that's great - then what? For my part, possibly something modeled off of the reconstruction of the former Yugoslavia in Iraq and Syria would be a functional plan, working with all our partners - the UN, the Arab League, the EU, NATO - to create a new order in the region, in order to prevent any new ISISes from emerging.


Israel and the United States have a long, deep friendship. But at this point, we seem to be reaching a point where the values on which we built that friendship have diverged. The goal of the United States in the region is to enable the creation of the sovereign state to which the Palestinian Arabs are entitled, just as the Jewish people are. Some basic values of the United States are tolerance and private property, and yet Israel continues to build settlements on Palestinian land, and Netanyahu himself attempted to scare voters to the polls by suggesting that members of a minority group would be voting. That's not something we can accept here in America, and we need to stop enabling this kind of behavior. I'm shocked and disturbed that Secretary Clinton - someone we put in charge of our diplomacy! - thinks that the Palestinians want to destroy the State of Israel. You'd think that somebody with her level of experience would know enough not to repeat statements that are blatantly false. A redoubled commitment to American negotiations with the explicit end goal of establishing some sort of (demilitarized) Palestinian state - working with Israeli and Palestinian moderates - should get that message across.


Yes, absolutely. Empirical work from - I think it was David Card - showed that it doesn't reduce employment, and some other studies have actually show that job creation was faster in states that raised their minimum wage, and obviously it'll help reduce poverty and income inequality. I'm sure Congress will have their own opinions on the matter, but a raise to $10 or $11 per hour isn't something I'd object to - do that, and then index it to inflation.


I do - estimates show that the majority of undocumented immigrants in this country right now are working, and I think the White House estimates that letting them do so legally and openly, and so collecting tax revenues from them and allowing them to take better jobs they may have the skill sets for, will increase GDP by almost a full percentage point over the next decade. These people are making more money, which then creates more demand and so more jobs. Having more immigrants come to the United States creates new possibility for production, more demand for goods and services, and some reports suggest it actually raises wages across the economy. I support Congressional action to make that more official - if people see a Congressional law that'll be very hard to change, those immigrants here now who know they're going to be able to stay here will work harder to integrate into our society. There's no point in, for example, learning English if you're just going to be deported and stuck with that useless skill. Giving these people - not full naturalization, but at least work permits - and the ability to be secure in their positions gives them an incentive to invest in themselves, which yields economic benefits for us all.


John Kerry's doing a pretty decent job right now as Secretary of State. I don't know how much he enjoys the job, given that he's actively job-hunting right now, but hey, if he wants the job...


Well, before I was named commander of the US Special Ops Command, Osama bin Laden was alive. And by the time I retired, as a result of an operation I organized and executed, he was not. I have lengthy experience in leading our military and helped establish the low-intensity conflict curriculum at the Naval Postgraduate School. I wrote the book on the sorts of conflicts our nation faces. 1. What will you do as president to combat ISIS and other terrorist groups? Do you agree with how the Obama administration has handled this issue?
I think there are some things that we could have done differently early in this crisis, but this is where we are now so the discussion needs to be "What do we do at this point?" I will say that I find it interesting that both Secretary Clinton and Secretary Kerry have distanced themselves from President Obama's handling of events thus far given that they both were involved at various points with these foreign affairs. At this point, I support several aspects of President Obama's current handling: garnering multi-lateral support (in the case of Yemen from Britain and Saudi Arabia) and strategic strikes. But we also need to think longer-term and consider the challenges of non-governmental terrorist groups. We should also create and support our regional allies in their fight against ISIS - not just in terms of military assistance, but also in promoting economic development and other factors that contribute to terrorism. 

2. In recent years, relations between the US and Israel have become more strained. What would you do to improve relations and also resolve the dispute between the Israelis and the Palestinians?
In any situation where there are multiple interests at stake, we need to find common goals . . . find where there is agreement and start there. Prime Minister Netanyahu has endorsed a two state solution, and with his recent apology to Israeli Arabs seems willing to work with Arabs at this point.  Let's build on that - let's use the model that President Carter and later President Clinton exemplified of bringing would-be rivals or opponents together to begin the dialogue.

3. Voters overwhelmingly favor an increase in the minimum wage, and multiple states have taken action on this. Do you favor increasing the minimum wage, and if so, by how much?
The short answer is YES I favor raising the minimum wage. Not only have states raised the minimum wage, but cities and local governments have as well - anywhere between $10.10 and $15.00 . . .  and we're not seeing the dire consequences of job loss that so many have predicted. In fact, job creation is up. So, we know that this needed to help working families, we know it doesn't have the dire consequences predicted, and we know that the general public overwhelmingly favors an increase (75% on a recent survey). I favor a minimum wage of $12.50 an hour - we can do that.

4. Do you agree with President Obama's executive order last year on immigration? What is your plan to reform the country's immigration system?
I find it interesting that so many people are raising significant issues with this when no such objections were raised about President Reagan's amnesty program. It is true that Executive Orders are typically reserved for administrative issues, but there is a long legal precedent of valid Executive Orders in areas that Congress has previously acquiesced - such as this case. I think the program then - and this program now - supports hardworking US residents who pay taxes and contribute to our society and who deserve to benefit from the same legal protections the rest of us have.

5. Out of all the other people on this stage, who would you most want to have in your Cabinet, and for what position?
There are many strengths and talents among my colleagues here on this stage - as well as many colleagues who are not on this stage, and I think we could all come together in a Castro Administration, united in our belief that working together benefits us all. If I had to pick just one, the first one that comes to mind is Senator Baldwin given her willingness to tackle difficult issues and always be on the right side of the issue. Her work in promoting health equality and basic human services would make her an ideal Secretary of Health and Human Services.

QUESTION: Governor Bush, I was an officer in first Iraq War. My son joined the military after 9/11 and served in Afghanistan. My family has fought for years to make the world safer. Today, President Obama is just letting the Saudis and Iran fight a war in Yemen. What will you do as President to make sure terrorists don’t use Yemen as a staging ground?

ANSWER: Well, that’s a really fantastic question. But first of all, let’s have a round of applause for your family’s service.  Yemen is a sad situation. The government is no longer truly the government. President Obama long applauded Yemen as a model for a safer Middle East. He talked the talk, but he never came close to talking the talk. We need a strong military with the ability to act in the region. We need a strong foreign and military aid policy. We must conduct ourselves in a way that makes people want to be our ally, and terrified to be our enemy. In Yemen, we need clear vision and decisive action.

No, I absolutely do not believe the President has handled this well. First of all, our President let this happen. He gave the order to retreat from Iraq, he wouldn't sign a status of forces with Baghdad. He basically polled his way out of Iraq, and when we ran, the terrorists ran in after us. It's a debacle of President Obama's creation.

How I would address it? It's critically important that we strengthen the government in bad. I would support a plan that aids the Iraqi military in launching ground offensives against ISIS. We've got to work with our allies in the region to destroy ISIS, not contain it, destroy it. That means working comprehensively with Saudi Arabia and the coalition they've built to address the deterioration of Yemen.


Look, Israel is the greatest ally we have in the Middle East. They were the first functioning, multiethnic democracy in the region. They've been a critical partner in the peace process, as well.

The issue is, the United States and Israel are both sitting at the table just waiting on the Palestinians to show up. The Palestinian Authority has always looked to force Israelis out of their homes, only been willing to consider a Palestinian state along 1967 borders, and have done nothing to address the terrorists within their territory. Israel is our friend, our ally, and a nation waiting at the table. As President, I'll support them and do everything I can to get the PA to the table.


You know, I don't blame people for wanting to do something about the struggle of the everyday American. Politicians have promised an awful lot from increasing the minimum wage. People feel compelled to do something to try to make life better.

But the hard truth is, the minimum wage won't help anyone. The people who enjoy larger paychecks because of an increase in the minimum wage will soon see the increase eaten away by upward movement in the cost of living. After the benefits have worn off for those people, you're just left with half a million people out of work.

The only way we're going to get the middle and working class back into the economy is to reform government, shrink the tax code, reduce the burden of regulation, and unleash the potential America knows it has. As President, I'm not going to fight to bankrupt small businesses and put people out of work by increasing government mandates, I'm going to focus on renewing the American idea for everyone, everywhere in this great country, no matter what.


Absolutely not. The order was unconstitutional. President Obama likes to remind us that Obamacare is the "law of the land." I'd just like to remind him, the Constitution is the law of the land.

The President's amnesty has ruined all plans to reform immigration. He's killed any hope of getting a plan that strengthens our borders while reforming our immigration system in a way that makes sense. That may be part of the plan. If you elect me, I plan on passing an immigration law that secures our border and effectively deals with the 12 million illegal immigrants already here. This involves paying fines for breaking our laws, not going on social services, working, learning English, and getting an education.


We've got a lot of great candidates up here. Really, I think Senator Graham would do well as Secretary of Defense, that's not to say I don't want any of the others. But the person I'd most like to see in Cabinet would be Senator Graham of the great state of South Carolina.
