Mitt Romney opts to run as an independent, drawing on his own personal wealth as well as that of his ultimate running mate Meg Whitman, and the backing of many wealthy Americans including Ross Perot and hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman. His platform is more centrist, drawing heavily on his record as governor of Massachusetts, and he takes a Dewey-esque approach to the ACA, stating that it is imperfect but that his business and managerial background would allow him to implement the law better and more efficiently than an Obama administration. Romney makes a firm break with his former party by calling the Iraq War a "failed pipe dream" at a public event, while also criticizing Obama and demanding oversight of drone strikes. He attempts to triangulate between Obama and Perry on social issues.

Rick Perry stumbles through his "oops" performance, but with no substantive, presumed frontrunner on the Republican side, primary voters eventually warm up to him after the other candidates peak and subsequently implode. He selects Mike Pence as his running mate and runs an aggressively Tea Party-centric campaign, calling for more autonomy for state governments, increasing domestic energy production at all costs, and taking heavily conservative positions on social issues. He criticizes Obama's foreign policy, arguing America should be more aggressive towards Iran.
