Title: Re: Whitest Obama Counties Post by: ElectionsGuy on December 25, 2013, 11:45:20 PM Awfully surprised VT doesn't have some counties on this list. I am too, but I checked and basically all the counties are 95 or 96 percent white. No >97% and only one that goes down to 91% (Chittenden) Title: Re: Whitest Obama Counties Post by: old timey villain on December 26, 2013, 12:04:32 AM Living in Georgia, I can't imagine a place where white people are divided politically or where most vote Democrat. The only places comparable in Georgia would be Athens and some urban yuppie areas of Atlanta.
In these places listed above, how does the white vote split? Is it based on religion or income or ethnicity? The only places comparable in Georgia would be Athens and some urban yuppie areas of Atlanta. In these places listed above, how does the white vote split? Is it based on religion or income or ethnicity? In the Midwest (as that's where most of these counties are), it is more based on income than any other region, I can tell you that. That's why the rich suburbs vote very republican and the poorer rural areas vote split or democratic. Although it mostly has to do with culture and traditions over history. Title: Re: Whitest Obama Counties Post by: Mr. Illini on December 27, 2013, 05:55:32 PM Living in Georgia, I can't imagine a place where white people are divided politically or where most vote Democrat. The only places comparable in Georgia would be Athens and some urban yuppie areas of Atlanta. In these places listed above, how does the white vote split? Is it based on religion or income or ethnicity? Midwestern whites are a lot different than southern whites. Midwestern whites often are grouped by ethnicity (ex. Scandanavians settled western Wisconsin and Germans settled eastern Wisconsin). The values of the immigrants who came here from around the world have been passed on to modern Midwesterners, and so, as a result, going off of the Wisconsin example given, you can often get very dramatic results like this, as the Scandanavians tend to be more trusting in government while German culture is very personally conservative: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Wisconsin_Gubernatorial_Election_Results_by_county%2C_2006.png In the south it is much more to do with racial lines it would seem, and so that it is why it can be so difficult to imagine a white Georgia county to be voting Democrat, although as shown by another user above, it is possible. Local political traditions, Protestants (but what kind?) vs Catholics, industrial vs agricultural, immigration/settlement patterns, economic history... It's more complicated than that though.
