I hope she runs for Governor rather than Senate. Schatz seems like a decent guy.

If she runs for either, is there any info on who could be her successor in the House?

Well know about Hanabusa within a few weeks. (http://dc808.blogs.civilbeat.com/post/45891609917/report-hanabusa-to-announce-plans-in-a-few-weeks)

I'm sure Ed Case would like to be back in office.

Or Mufi Hanneman could try for Congress one more time.

Hmm... (http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/senate-races/290451-hanabusa-splits-with-schatz-on-government-funding-vote)

Quote
Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) split with Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) on a key government funding vote and is highlighting her "no" vote in the state as she mulls a possible primary bid against him.

The vote on which Hanabusa and Schatz differed was on whether to continue government funding for the next six months at current levels, which included recent sequestration cuts. Schatz backed the bill, which the White House signed, while Hanabusa bucked many in her party and voted against it. Hawaii, with its high number of military bases, will likely feel the impact of sequestration more severely than other states.

"My opposition to the measure was simple, we kept spending at 2011 levels through the end of the fiscal year, but we failed to address sequestration. We left in place a series of indiscriminate budget cuts totaling $85 billion over the next six months," she wrote in an op-ed in the Hawaii Reporter. "This dramatic reduction will slowly eliminate critical government programs and defund vital operations and services."

Hanabusa later invokes Inouye's memory in explaining her vote — and subtly rebukes the president.

Thats why my hunch is she'll go for Senate.

That's a shame, considering I'm enjoying Schatz's term so far. Plus it would ruin Hawaii's streak of every senator either retiring or dying in office.

On the other hand, I greatly dislike Abercrombie and Linda Lingle showed that Hawaii is willing to elect Republican governors.

This doesn't really surprise me, as Schatz has been active on climate issues, but the LCV has endorsed him. (http://www.lcv.org/media/press-releases/LCV-Action-Fund-Endorses-Brian-Schatz-for-U-S-Senate.html)

Schatz pulled in $ 1.1 million this quarter. (http://www.hawaiireporter.com/u-s-senator-brian-schatz-raises-more-than-1-1-million-in-first-quarter-of-2013/123) Pretty good.

It's going to be really awkward if Schatz primary challenges the guy who appointed him to the Senate.

He'll try to stay in the Senate no doubt; I just posted that here because this was the only thread with Hawaii stuff.

Hanabusa only raked in (http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/senate-races/294087-rep-hanabusa-brings-in-230k-as-she-eyes-other-offices) $230K last quarter. Not especially impressive by any means.

Hanabusa isn't a very intelligent woman. She isn't even House material. I hope Schatz can hang on. Fundraising looks solid.

Raised $230k for what? She's not even running for anything yet and she already raised $230k? Give me that money, I'm not running for anything either. :)

Schatz is much more preferable to Hanabusa. Somebody who is young and progressive is what we need.

It's not about her personally as much as it is about the ethics of her claim to the seat and what Inouye chose to do in his final days.  You don't get to will your senate seat in this country, no matter who you are.  It's not a title of nobility!

It sounds like Napoleon's criticism is more directed at Hanabusa herself :P

But Hanabusa isn't claiming the seat now, she's considering running to take office in the future. If she did run and win, her claim to the seat would be based on the result of an election, not Inouye's will.

Schatz can't say he's entitled to avoid a challenge or hold the seat just because the governor picked him.

Have you heard her speak? It's embarrassing

She can't even hold her own against a troll like Bill O'Reilly. (http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/20568394/hanabusa-oreilly-duke-it-out-on-national-tv) Schatz is a great Senator and there is no reason to primary him. Abercrombie deserves to keep his seat, frankly, for not appointing Hanabusa. That's a good enough reason. Hanabusa didn't deserve to be appointed, just like Caroline Kennedy didn't. I don't understand the hype at all.

Still have to wonder why Ambercrombie didn't remove the most obvious and overwhelming obstacle to his reelection by appointing her to Inouye's seat.
