Gore wins 2000 after getting endorsed by Ralph Nader he takes 296 electoral votes (the abstaining elector from DC, Florida and New Hampshire) as well as 51% of pop vote. He ushers in a new era of bipartisanship in his first SOTU, making GOP appointments to his cabinet. After 9/11 (sorry for those who believe in Bush inside job), he gets Cong approval to attack Afghanistan but VP Joe Lieberman and Secretary of Defense John McCain push for Iraq, the former threatening to break a tie vote in the Senate to invade Iraq. With GOP pundits bringing up his anti-profiling history regarding Muslims and other ethnoreligious groups, he is pressured into declaring another war on all sides. He raises taxes to fund the wars, keeping the budget balanced. In 2004, he once again defeats Bush with a slightly wider margin. His federal funding to repair New Orleans levees is deemed wasteful by GOP. Continue?

Unfortunately we will never know what Al Gore would have done as President and how history would have been changed. However I would take Al Gore or John McCain over George W Bush as President

This is the 2004 map with 341 for Gore-Lieberman to 197 for Bush-Dole.

I think during his second term, Gore would not fair any better than Bush (RL) did, admittedly his response to the Katrina catastrophe will be a lot quicker, and therefore there will be no particular fall-out, I think the GOP will make massive gains, and Gore will replace John McCain with Robert Gates. McCain, will thus be free to criticize the Gore administration and will attempt to manipulate a political comeback, however Mitt Romney emerges as the likely GOP nominee and will secure the nomination on the first ballot, both Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman will battle it out for the Democratic nod, however it is Joe Lieberman who prevails and goes for John Edwards as his VP, in this TL, Edwards has remained in Senate, winning reelection in 2004. The GOP go with Mitt Romney for President and Jeb Bush for the second spot.
