Title: America's First Openly LGBT President
Post by: feeblepizza on March 14, 2011, 05:40:57 PM
When will America have its first openly LGTB President? I think it will be within the next 50 years. After all, in 1901 who would expect America to elect a Roman-Catholic? In 1958 who would expect America to elect a biracial President? Now, electing an LGTB President seems very unlikely. But in forty/fifty years? Who knows.

Not for a very long time.

The latest polling that I'm aware of (2007 or so) shows that 55% of Americans would support a homosexual (not bisexual, just homosexual) for President.

There's a HUGE difference between the academic idea and actually voting for a gay or lesbian candidate.

On top of that, its a measure of "Would you possibly support a LGBT candidate".  I assume alot of those people would never vote for the same candidate in any election.

Beside, it's not proven.

It probably won't be for a while. I think there are plenty of other minorities who feel like it's "their" turn to have one of "their" people in the White House. Goes without saying but women are aching to shatter that glass ceiling that Hillary put 18 million cracks in. I think our next milestone will be a female President (NOT Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann), and then probably a Hispanic/Latino after that. I could, however, foresee a gay president before seeing the first Asian, Native American or Jewish President. Just my opinion, though.

Never. Simple as that. We still have yet to have a Woman (Palin, Haley or Bachaman), Pentacostal(if Palin wins), Jewish (Cantor, Root), Latino (Rubio, or Bill Richardson))(including Italians and Spanish based groups), Asian (could happen if Mitch Daniels Nikki Haley, or Bobby Jindal wins) Morman (Mitt Romney)
Native Americans etc etc.

Even as a Republican, I find it kinda funny that besides Richardson, JCL doesn't mention any Democrats.

Notice I also mentioned a third party candidate. Something my government teacher ,a liberal democrat, once told me that it would be advantageous to nominate a minority or a woman for president. I see a minority or woman presidential nominee between now and 2020 for the GOP.

I find it funnier that he seems to consider Italians Latino and Syrian Christians Asian (there is admittedly some sort of point to the latter, but Asians is very well understood to mean East or South Asian - and even the inclusion of South Asians came about by a gradual process about a generation ago.)
