Nightlife? I don't know who or what that is.

Actually, if you haven't figured it out already, Salina is pretty white trash. The town that I grew up in, Kanopolis, was a lot more fun as far as "nightlife" goes. It was a town of 500 people but we had three bars. Drinking I suppose was all there was to do.

Twas a yoke.

Yea, I can tell this is as desolate as it gets.  And 3 bars for 500 people?  I hope you had a beer Olympics where the regulars of each would be pitted against each other in sport.

Amongst true professionals, if you can count how many you've had, you haven't had enough!

On the topic of Kansas (and Nebraska too), I have to say that the tourism people out there are extremely resourceful, despite having almost nothing to work with. Lots of people pass through, and Kansans, trying to get people to stop and drop a few dollars have thought of a million kitchy tourist things for people do along the way. Come see the world's largest ball of twine. Seriously. http://www.kansastravel.org/balloftwine.htm

"Jesus heals and restores, pornography destroys" if you can't see it.

That was a big to-do about 10 years ago. A Lion's Den went in a few miles west of Abilene, and the townsfolk got up in arms asking, "They can't build that here, can they?" and "Whatever shall we do!?" Alas, there was nothing they could do, save for pass some poorly-timed zoning laws afterwards that didn't deal with their menace.

The good citizens of Abilene fought mightily against the pornographic hoards, including the farmer who owned land on both sides of the store erecting (pffft, erect!) billboards like the one you saw. There used to be another of THE LORD and his judging eyes, watching us hustle in the store in trenchcoats and dark sunglasses.

There was a church group that used to go park in the Lion's Den parking lot and write down license plate numbers of patrons, as if they could tattle on them. They stopped when a friend of mine pulled up behind them, wrote down their license plates, and -- when asked what he was going to do with them -- responded, "Oh, you'll see."

Wow.  Writing down the license plates of people buying porn?  That is seriously what you do with your time?  These types of religiouses are truly the lowest of the low.

I wish I could've seen the Lord's Eyes.  That's a hoot.

When they let the reactor engineers out of the dungeon we know as "the pit", I saw a bit of the Pacific while we were doing operations in Hawaii.

Where are you now? Hell, give me a mile marker and I can tell. I'm trying to see if I'm able to make it back down to the bus station without hanging out there by myself for too long!

Man, better timing and it could've been a big Atlas Thanksgiving!  Maybe even our dear fallen opebo would have been in the area!  Could you imagine?

Driving across the middle of this state makes me miss that wily ol' kook.  He always said it was barren and devoid of prostitution.   RIP : (

Halfway across Mizz-or-uhh.  Found a totem pole bench so I took a pic.

I was gonna take a pic with the pregnant chick smoking but I wanted to keep this positive.  The bus is starting to get a decidedly, how you say, Confederate feel to it.  St. Louie can't come soon enough.

Ladies (lol) and gentlemen, I'm about to cross the mighty Miss and reenter the Eastern United States.  A milestone in my journey, indeed!

I just wish the crazy old lady up front would stop asking everybody where her luggage is.  Ugh.

Oh yea.  Now she's gonna sue.

Heres a nice shot of the arch.

But a note about St. Louis.  The downtown area is mind-numbingly disappointing.  Where are the restaurants?  Music clubs?  Anything!  Of every U.S. city I've been to, only Phoenix at 120 degrees gave me a worse impression.  Now I REALLY hope L.A. stomps them in the NLDS.

Did Granny leave her luggage at the bus stop? That'd drive me insane. I fear losing things like that.

So I just entered Nevada for the first time ever.  Some impressions.

1.  Damn, I knew Vegas had all the lights and glitz, but almost every single hotel gives off that vibe, even 60+ miles out.  Very flashy and lit up.

Yep.  You get used to it.

2. Carls Jr seems more prevalent than McDonalds.

Huh?  I can only think of two Carls Jr. locations in the entire city off the top of my head, and you probably passed both of them.  McDonalds, meanwhile...

3. I love how these little towns pop up out of no where in the night.  Population is always like 500-600 and you can't even see anything besides fast food joints and gas stations.  Where do they live?

I've wondered the same thing!!  Driving northwest out of Vegas heading either for California or upstate Nevada is... a learning experience in rural living.

4. The Vegas suburbs look very uniform and boring.  Even out here they are dullsvilles.

Oh, you don't even know.  Assuming you only saw I-15 and downtown for a bit, you didn't really see anything.  Take a look at Mountains Edge next time you're here, and you can't help but hum 'Little Boxes' quietly to yourself.

5. Did the city planners have an electric ancient Rome in mind?

More like Sodom.
