The Hillary campaign threw McAuliffe under the bus on this one. Hillary has assumed the mantle of the "protectionist lite" candidate in this election, and given her opponent, is not going to be walking that back, at least prior to election day.
I know it's semi-important for you to now believe that the Democrats can morph into a fiscally moderate party where you can feel politically at home (especially after defecting from the GOP), but keep dreamin'. There's nothing "lite" about her protectionism, and any Democrat who wants to get the nomination in the near future is going to have to hold similar views, IMO. This primary season made that obvious. I'd argue there's a much higher chance of the next Republican nominee being for free trade than the next Democratic one.
