One thing of importance to remember is Nixon's screwing with the peace talks on the eve of the election. Johnson knew it was going on but for whatever reason chose not to intervene. Had it been Johnson's own presidency on the line, I have little doubt that he would've accepted such malfeasance. If the peace talks are taken off the table entirely, it's of little doubt that Johnson would've been crushed. However, as I recall, when it seemed like Johnson had finally negotiated an end, that was a game changer and Humphrey started gaining in the polls.
