A fairly significant portion of these people are unemployable for a reason.

The idea is nutter. What a hideous and inefficient way, to deal with those who are unable to compete, or choose not to compete, in the job marketplace. The end.

Great company you're in there, Torie.  Fellows, fellows, please let go of your nonsense fantasy 'the market'. People are included or excluded based on the application of State power.  Those included are rewarded and punished to varying degrees (the long humiliation of paid employment), those excluded are crucified in great pain (for the obvious purpose of frightening those 'included').  Its all a great big lovely prison of pain, misery, abuse, envy, humiliation, deception, control, and hopelessness.  (I'm sure I could add more - I'm one of the lucky ones with leisure and a big vocabulary).

Opebo my man, do you ever read any of my posts where I favor a social safety net, and cross subsidies, and means testing galore, which would finally stop myself (and my ilk) from being the biggest welfare queen on this Forum (the Fruited Plain)? I guess not.

Oh, sure I read those.  But, alas, those fine sentiments do nothing to get rid of the problem.
