Besides Obama choosing Hillary for State, have there been any other major instances where a winning candidate nominates another candidate to serve in his cabinet?

Inslee for EPA and Yang for Commerce or Labor might be some examples, since in this wide race some candidates end up being single-issue. Williamson for Czarina of Spiritual Healing and Improving Race Relations!

I think a president Sanders should poach useless Dems from safe blue states like Durbin, Schumer, etc... for his cabinet then fire them all a week later so we are rid of them from Congress.

Okay that's a fair idea but I'm talking specifically about people running for president.

And have his replacement appointed by JB Pritzker? Is that really any better?

How can you get any worse than Durbin?

You realize what state he's from, right?

To answer the original question, I could see Harris becoming AG or being the running mate if she's not the nominee. Otherwise probably not many - I don't think they're going to poach the Senate too much considering how close it's likely to be after 2020.

Yang would be an interesting Commerce Secretary with his background, though I think his Presidential campaign might have derailed that, actually - what with all the weird "citizen points" and paternalist policies he's promoting.

I probably missed some, but here's a pretty long list of presidential rivals-turned-cabinet members:

1988: Jack Kemp (HUD)
1952: Harold Stassen (had cabinet rank)
1920: Herbert Hoover (Commerce)
1908: Philander Knox (State)
1884: Thomas F. Bayard (State)
1880: James G. Blaine (State)
1860: William Seward (State), Salmon Chase (Treasury), Simon Cameron (War), Edward Bates (AG)
1852: William Marcy (State)
1844: James Buchanan (State)
1824: Henry Clay (State)
1816: William H. Crawford (Treasury)
1808: James Monroe (State/War, though not immediately after the election)
