Kinda crazy that his villain origin story is being a failed screenwriter. The world could have been spared his toxic political opinions if he had just got a writing position on some crappy network primetime show, or worked as a producer in the Hollywood he claims to hate so much, but wanted to be a part of just like the rest of his family members.

The same origin story as Steve Bannon.

Reminds me of the idea of traveling back in time to permit Hitler to go to art school.

Of course Barbie would have made money.

It's an aleady known brand for millions and millions of 6 year old girls, who will nag their parents to see it and they will say "why not, it's only a Barbie Doll".

Same demographic as Frozen, but the merchandising came first.

Wow. It's almost like the audiences who gave it overwhelming reviews leading to increased box office traffic all must have fallen asleep at the beginning of the movie and just reported about a dream they had instead.
Let me put it this way:

If the movie wasn't called Barbie and the script had no Barbie names in it, would it have made money ?

Certainly less money.

It's all about the Brand, like the Star Wars prequels-sequels, or designer products.

Some people just buy the logo on a product, regardless of product quality.
How many movies are based on a brand like that? Every superhero film? Every film based on it comic book or a video game? Every movie based on a TV series? The list goes on and on and on. How many of those have all flopped despite strong brand recognition?

This is a vastly over simplistic explanation.

What's annoying me about all of this crap among the elder Millennial men is that they're acting like they're the only generation who's ever had to come to terms with being old and out of touch. Every generation goes through this. You don't think people born in 1928 were disturbed by the popularity of the Rolling Stones or the Who? It's just these 40 year old men with ED that are failing to cope with it right now, and it's pathetic and transparent. You'd think that Shapiro (and his audience of pathetic men) would see how embarrassing it is that they're spending an hour of their lives ranting about how offended they are that the f-cking Barbie movie wasn't made to appeal to them.

There's a certain type of guy who thinks that any movie that doesn't have 18-49 year old men as its target audience is doomed to fail. It's very bizarre.

Barbie is an internationally famous children's toy, and this movie has a star-studded cast, and the marketing has been very strong. There was no scenario where this movie did poorly.

Lately you have Sonic, Super Mario, Pikatsu, you could say a cheap way for a quick buck.

Same script but no Brand might have bombed, like when Oogieloves tried to be Teletubies without using their name.

It doesn't hurt basing a movie out of a Brand, it's bad for creativity though, and no guarantees  if the production sucks (Star Wars sequels-prequels).

Now a movie based on a Brand and with a good production, that's one big goldmine like Harry Potter.
