Has a serious conflict with Greece over the name. How trivial and stupid is that?

Greece insists everyone call it The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, a name that dosn't exactly roll off the tongue. But that' show pretty much all its NATO allies see it. Everyone else calls it just the Republic of Macedonia.

Actually, it is The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia even at the UN - alphabetically seated next to Tajikistan.

The Greeks don't like them becauase Macedonia is right next to the Greek province of Macedon - they're afraid Macedonia wants a nice little sea coast and reunite classical Macedon.

Reminds me of what my old Ancient Greek History teacher in college said - back then, the Macedonians were definitely Greek but the Greeks to their south didn't want to think of them as such. Now, the Macedonians are definitely not Greek but the Greeks to their south claim they are. As he put it: "I never thought I'd see that silly argument re-emerge." Wink

Ah yeah, the Fyrom. How does that "not roll off the tongue", though?

My club's goalkeeper is Macedonian btw. That is to say, his parents were. He's lived all his life in Hessen. Funniest thing was when in the midnineties he played 3 or 4 times for Macedonia, then had a dispute with the national coach and gave up his Macedonian citizenship in order not to be called up again.
