The birthplace of Richard Nixon, this city has voted Republican in every presidential election since its incorporation in 1967. Even Jerry Brown lost the city in 1978, even as he became one of the few statewide Democrats (pre-2016) to win Orange County.
Apparently, this Republican streak goes back even before the city's incorporation. Yorba Linda voters
voted for Alf Landon in 1936 (even as FDR won all 58 of California's counties in a landslide) and voted Republican in
1940 (by a 2-to-1 margin) and in
1944.
In 1960, native son Nixon
got 1,209 votes (72%), compared to only 470 for JFK (28%) and 4 votes for other candidates. However, on the same day it surprisingly voted for Democratic Assemblyman Richard Hanna by a very narrow margin.
