In the PA13 spirit, here is a map of Shelby County, TN by ideology:

Well it really had nothing to do with PA 13. It was the whole city.  Tongue

The ones I use are GIS-based products.

Arc Explorer GIS viewer (free)
http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/download.html

Then, to get the census data that includes census blocks, voting precincts as of 2000, and some demographic data
http://arcdata.esri.com/data/tiger2000/tiger_download.cfm

Its reasonably complicated and will take you a while to figure out if you aren't used to this kind of software.

What's that Blue enclave by the river?
Also, no Black Middle Class areas?
Anyways, Blacks aren't a populist monolith. Although they certainly lean that way.

Isn't the pink area kind of like an arts district or something? I visited Memphis in 1990, and it seems like that's what it was.

The blue enclave is Harbor Town and the revitalized Downtown.  It's probably better described as "moderate" as opposed to "moderate-conservative" or "moderate-liberal".

There are some middle-class black areas on the south end of the city, but they vote the same way and are ideologically the same as other African-Americans.  I think President Bush did a little better among lower-class blacks and Lamar Alexander does a little better among middle and upper-class blacks.. but thats probably the only perceptable difference.

That's midtown.  It goes about 80% Republican in local elections, but Bush only got about 35-40% in the area.  Its "artsy", yes.. but our true arts district is now South Main in downtown.

It used to be the home of the majority of the local Republican leadership (In 1991 we had a fight between the Midtowners and the suburbanites) but many of those folks have since either passed away or moved on.   One of these leaders had a great obituary headline... "Local woman active in Planned Parenthood, Republican Party"

The Gay and Lesbian community center, Mid South Peace and Justice Center, etc. are located within that area.  It will probably grow more Democratic if the social issues continue to play a prominent role.

Don, unrelatedly, do you happen to know where I could find 2004 Census data with voting tracts for the GIS program? I have 2000 for Washington, but - while interesting - it's not very useful.

The Census bureau has released 2004 data... the problem is that most of the data is just 2000 data with a file named for 2004 Tongue
