LBJ.

He accomplished a lot. A whole lot. His term was the culmination of the great liberal movement, when it actually stood for things worth standing for, like civil rights, before it became indelibly associated with pot-smoking Communist college students, an association it has still not fully lost. On the home front, he did more than any President since Lincoln (other than FDR).

What does he get remembered for? Vietnam.

I have to go with James K. Polk.  He expanded the country dramatically, yet never gets any credit for it.
Yeah I hate Polk! Tongue

Me too! Polk-haters of the world, unite!

James K. Polk and Calvin Coolidge...two of the best.
What is with people and Polk? He invaded another country to annex some land and is imperialist scum. We probably could have bought the land anyways without a war, if a more liberal minded government came to power in the 1850's with Mexico's debt being such a problem.

But he represents everything great about this country! You know...starting a war...conquering a nation...imposing a harsh peace...reneging on his campaign promise...having a bellicose campaign promise...

I have finally found a home. Polk has been my favorite underrated President since I learned about him in my high school American History class. He did so much to expand this country and assert our territorial manifest destiny in one term (as he promised on the campaign trail).

Polk for the face of the $5 bill. Lincoln already has his currency.

Imperialism is not a good thing.

So then Jefferson would also be a crappy president. Polk kept our borders safe and expanded them to keep us safe. Imperialism is bad today, but manifest destiny then was justified and appropriate.

And he actually kept all his major campaign promises. Never a bad thing.

Manifest destiny was not at all justifiable. How'd how it work out for the Mexicans in the Southwest? I'm not a huge fan of Jefferson, but Napoleon had no use for the Louisiana after the revolt in Haiti.

He didn't get Fifty-Four Fourty or start a fight.

Generally, I support Liberal Republicans and Blue-dog Democrats.

They're diametrically opposite from each other.

France is the reason American ever intervened in Vietnam, Antonio.

Yes, but that doesn't mean you can blame France. It was America's decision.

Correct.  It is the fault of LBJ, JFK, Ike, congress and the voters....in that order.

And the obvious reason for the bipartisan support was because it was popular.
