Hmmm...

The United Northeast (Maine to Maryland) is worth a grand total of 117 EV's.

The Solid South (the CSA) is worth 153 EV's.  Throw in KY/MO/WV, and you've got 177.

Now, who has the better deal here?

Realistically the Republicans are just as dead on the West Coast as they are in the Northeast.  Overall the state's leanings are almost precisely what we see in the 2004 election - 286 to 251.  The South is a component of that, but there is no reason for the Democrats to focus on a region that is so extreme compared to the rest of the country.

I think the reason so much fuss is made over the South and suchlike backward places is the claim traditionalists like to make that the Heartland is the 'Real America'.  Nonsense of course.
