Apparently there has been contact with the brothers to try and negotiate a surrender and they have indicated they'd prefer a martyr's death.

One point of hope for the hostage(s): so far they appear to have gone out of their way not to kill 'innocent' bystanders. They spared the woman who let them into the offices of Charlie Hebdo, for example, and Ahmed Merabet seems to have been just unlucky in opening fire on them. Also, if maximum havoc had been their goal, it wouldn't have been particularly hard for two heavily armed men on the loose in Northern France to kill quite a few people. It doesn't seem unlikely that they conceive of their own acts as a targeted operation, which might mean they'll refrain from harming any hostages if they don't feel they have to.

Fck. Hopefully the attack on a kosher supermarket will make everyone realize that we can't avoid this by self-censoring some cartoons. Not only is it wrong on principle, those people can't be appeased anyway.
