To hell with the potential ad bait. The DSCC and DNC need to go all-in on fueling Jones and burying Moore.

Talk about crazy. I legitimately think Jones can win this. It comes down to turnout 100% though. I can Alabaman Republicans not turning out much, considering how much of a mess its GOP has been lately.

Not to mention that even the state's Religious Right have had a long history of balking at Moore. It takes a lot for a Republican to be infamous in Alabama, and Moore has done it. He is to Alabama what Arpaio is to Arizona.

this probably helps Moore in Alabama as disgusting as that is

I have a hard time believing that voters in any state, even a deeply conservative one, support the systemic execution of gay people in significant enough numbers for this to help. Then again, maybe I'm just being overly optimistic.

Gay marriage isn't even a huge issue any more. The public conscience has shifted dramatically since Obergefell - even in states like Alabama, where they've at least become less intolerant. Moore's stance is on the absolute most insane of fringes, and Jones and the DSCC need to absolutely level him for it.

I wonder. If Strange loses the primary, which is practically a guarantee at this point, is there any chance he does a Dardenne and backs Jones? If it happened, I'm reasonably sure it would be the death of Moore's campaign.

Democrats are not winning this seat. Frankly, the only way to stop Moore is to prop Strange.

I think we're seriously underestimating how much Alabamans hate Roy Moore. He's a chronic general election loser for a reason.

I wonder if he even realizes just how dire his poll numbers have been lately.

Okay, this one might actually be the end of him. Executiongate was bad, but this is almost worse than Akin's career-ender.

Likely R, but you never know. From my understanding of states like Alabama, Mississippi, and West Virginia, they love their incumbents.

Still trying to wrap my head around this one. It's probably too late for Strange to save himself, but there's no chance Jones doesn't absolutely bury Moore for this. He just threw the "patriotic American" ball right into Jones' court, and that's the only ball that really matters in Alabama.

This is just absurd.

Hemmmmm

[See's Alabama]

oh my god he's gonna win.

I'm serious. Moore just made the worst possible gaffe in the worst possible state at the worst possible time. States like Alabama are exactly the wrong place to be blaming America for 9/11.

Also, if I may suggest a title for this new megathread: "AL-SEN: Make Moore Gaffes"

Roy Moore is crazy, but I do think that he can still win. There are a lot of very hardcore religious voters who believe what Moore believes and they will turn up for him.

Nah, I'm pretty sure religious Alabamans are more inclined to blame the dirty Muslims for 9/11 than they are to blame America.

Right now, the only thing working against Jones (besides Alabama's generally far-right leanings) is the fact that his beliefs are almost Berniecrat in nature, but who knows. Having a populist bent might help him with the Alabama WWC.

He was using the Old Testament and that's not going to be seen as "blaming America", it's going to be seen as blaming liberals for testing God's wrath. These people who believe in the Old Testament seriously believe that God will punish the country because of liberals.

I'm not being a smartass when I say that I'm not sure Alabamans think that deeply about their beliefs. Moreover, most of the self-flagellating Jerry Falwell types are long-dead or long-irrelevant at this point, even in the Deep South.

Ye gods and saints, Moore's campaign is like watching a World War I army specialist hand boxes of ammunition to an enemy Maxim gunner.

One thing's for sure: Jones can at least use this to obliterate what little African-American support Moore might have had up to this point.

Unfortunately, that only raises Jones's chances of victory from about 5% to 10%.

He needs whatever he can get.

Kristol isn't terrifically relevant any more, but the ideological implications here might be huge.

That could easily hurt Jones. People tend to take pride in the state they live in.

Jones has such little room to mess up.

I think the only people likely to care very much about this are already planning to vote for Moore.

This thread has very nicely proven why I will never register as a Democrat again.

I think this might actually be the career-ender for Moore. If Gianforte had been hit with Assaultgate this far out in the special election, he would've been DOA, too.

Weird how being a Trump supporter will probably boost her credibility.

Decertifying Moore and running a Strange write in campaign seems like the path forward for the GOP.

I have to imagine this could be their move.

It's their only way forward, but it's also their worst way forward. Vote-splitting will kill their chances once and for all.

If the state GOP does decertify Moore and runs a write-in Strange campaign, does Strange win?

Nope, it would make a Moore win even more likely (if that's possible) by splitting the sane vote.

Come on, IS. You're treading perilously close to Obnoxious Twat territory.
