What made him able to win this state in 2012 despite the fact, like Iowa and Florida, it turned much redder just a few years later?

Romney was an establishment candidate of a pro trade and still neocon party. Trump is way more appealing that Romney in appalachian, northern and eastern Ohio.

Romney repelled non college white voters in Ohio, he got fewer votes than McCain did in 2008, which also sums up his campaign as a whole.

Redban:
Trump scored record-high support from blue-collar whites, which pushed those Midwest states away from Dems. Before him, Ohio was straight purple. Obama won Ohio because Romney and the Republicans didn't win over many Midwest working-class whites as yet
