A first past the post system (the electoral college is honestly not much of a deviation from that) always tends toward two parties. That being said, who those two parties are can change with time. If the Republican party doesn't solve its problem with non-whites, I can definitely see the libertarian party rising to power or the democratic party splitting in two over the next several decades.
