I'm beginning to realize that.  However, stubborn as I am, I'm probably not going to listen to that.

No offense, but these two sentences could easily serve as your life motto.

So he knows what his problem is and is in no way interested in changing for the better? Sad.

Why was the "mission" trip to Kenya the only way to go abroad? It's impossibly to apply for a passport, buy a flight ticket, etc. outside of that context?

Not that it was a poor idea per se, just wondering what that meant.

Can't you get unemployment benefits for the next 3 1/2 weeks?

Maybe, but doesn't it take forever for it to get started?  I know the tried and true answer will be "it'll take forever if you never get started", but seriously even if I did apply let's say on Tuesday (after the holiday), will I be approved and have checks coming in my mail before Friday, June 15, 2012?

Even if not, it would be retroactive, right? So it can only help you.

Pride? You pay taxes. That's what taxes are for - to fund government programs. If you qualify for something, it's only reasonable and certainly nothing to be ashamed of if you accept it. Whether you "need" it or not.

I figured out something this morning.

I am way too old to stay up until 2:00 am.  (I didn't get in bed until 2:15).  Subsequently, I didn't get up until 11:00.  I am way too old to be doing that, because now the day is literally almost half over (as of noon) and my left shoulder is sore, and I've got a headache from sleeping too late.  I'll be paying for this all day.  I can stay up until midnight just fine, and 1:00 is not that big of a deal, but once I get past 1:00, forget it, I need to go to bed.  I'm 30 years old and I'm not as young as I used to be.  My college self is long gone.

It's just a matter of what you're used to.

btw... it's not a career... it's a job.

It's always a career. Until it's gone. Then the next career begins.

What's up with the military time, dude?   I certainly can understand it well enough but why the change?

Because he's Kenyan, did you forget?

We use 24-hour time in Europe (and I imagine pretty much everywhere in the world).

Bushie isn't white though; he's a Native American.

No, a native Kenyan-American.

What's the "Kenya story" people are getting infractions for?

It was brilliant...but also very distasteful. Can't blame the mods.

But you've already known you had to diet... you talked about eating fish sticks and all that unhealthy crap years ago.  Seeing a doctor every few months isn't going to "enforce" anything.  If  you keep eating the way you have been, eventually he'll probably stop telling you to diet because  he'll realize you're not going to.

Do you mean to imply that leaving the cheese off a hamburger doesn't make it a healthy eating option?

4 eggo waffles? Gotta cut that out.

It was either that or starve.  This boy doesn't like to not eat...

That's all grocery stores in Oklahoma have?

do not take a sick day anytime soon!

Well, technically, I can't until I get past my 90 days which will be 18 September, so I'm good there, not that I planned on it anyway!

So what happens if people really get sick during the first 90 days?

Employers have no obligation to give time off for minor illnesses or for new employees. Employees are only entitled to (unpaid) time off if
1. The company has 50 or more employees within a 75 mile radius of the worksite.
AND
2. The employee has worked there for 12 months and has worked at least 1250 hours.
AND
3. The employee is seriously ill or needs the time to care for an immediate family member who is seriously ill or a new baby.

Why are things so f**ked up in the US....? I'm sorry....but wow.

Usually, new employees have to be at a company 6 months before they can start taking paid sick time.  Before that, it's unpaid, and usually frowned upon if you take any time off within the first 90 days of employment. Of course, if you're really sick, than your sick and you don't go in.

I'm used to unlimited PAID "sick time" based on it being determined medically necessary by a doctor. Whether you've worked somewhere for 30 days or 1 year, doesn't really affect whether you're too sick to work or not...

If you really want to try and lose weight you should try and make it onto The Biggest Loser. They'll break you push yourself like you can't on your own.

I've thought about that or possibly even Big Brother with those competitions.  However, even though I'm still 250 pounds, I'm only 40 pounds from my ultimate goal of 210.  I can easily do it in the next 6 months.  I'm not going to try to get below 200, as I want to be just a little plump, but definitely a lot lower than I am now.  I'm 40 pounds from my goal, but only 25 pounds from being satisfied.  The range i would like to be at is 200-225.  I have absolutely no desire to be slim, fit, and trim.  I just want to be a lot lighter than I am now.

You have no desire to be slim and fit?

I see you're leaning towards supporting our President again. Terrific!

Notice a pattern here? Same thing happens every election year.

Out of curiosity, how are you managing the hotel bill? I can't imagine that it's cheap, even for a long-term stay. I'd think a month-to-month apartment lease would be significantly cheaper.

I imagine it's the normal answer?

How can his parents afford that? $2,000 for 2 months? I don't think they are particularly wealthy in the first place.

Maybe they're financing things the way the US government does?

He would be just fine.

Bushie, you remember I told you many times that you could come teach in Thailand?  Just go back and get your teaching certification from an Oklahoma 'university', and you can make a $3,500/month salary in Bangkok - a fabulous living here.  And, its really not that difficult for an early-morning type such as yourself.

He should just try to get citizenship in the European Union somehow and live off the welfare state...

I have to say it is completely crazy that jobs don't allow people a couple of weeks off to go somewhere on holiday - such as Kenya.  Such holidays should be required to be paid, by law.

My sympathies to all of you, not just BushOK, facing this oppressive environment.

Agree entirely, actually.
