Hungary has accused Austria of confusing “solidarity and stupidity” after Vienna said that nations which do not accept their share of refugees under European Union quotas should face sanctions.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann had said that countries who did not cooperate with the refugee programme and received more money from the EU than they put in should see their subsidies cut.

“The Austrian chancellor does not see the difference between solidarity and stupidity” said Budapest’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

“Solidarity means helping people who are in danger where they live, and helping them to return home once the conflict is finished,” Szijjarto told Hungarian national press agency MTI Sunday.

“Stupidity is letting hundreds of thousands of people — millions — into Europe with no controls, while everyone, Europeans and migrants alike, can see they’ll never get what they hoped for here,” he said.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has also threatened legal action against EU countries that refused to accept refugees under the bloc’s quota programme, specifically mentioning Hungary and Slovakia.

Szijjarto, a member of Viktor Orban’s hardline right-wing government, accused foreign politicians of “using blackmail to bring more migrants into Europe, then distributing them through a system of obligatory quotas”.

According to plans to distribute 160,000 refugees and migrants across the bloc, Slovakia and Hungary are due to take in around 2,300 people each. But the relocation plan, drawn up in September, is proving to be slow moving and difficult to put into effect.

The BMI has forced the city of St. Johann in Tirol (8.000 people) to open the Wintersteller army barracks to about 300-500 (!) asylum seekers.

These army barracks are about a quarter mile away from my brother's house ... and he tells me the local residents there are already highly annoyed and pissed-off by this dictatorial move.

The new Austrian Defense Minister Hans-Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) said today that he will authorize the use of army Hercules planes to deport economic migrants who enter Austria illegally and deport them to their countries of origin (if possible):



Recently, many asylum seekers came from countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Egypt etc. - which are hardly war zones. Under the Geneva convention, these people have no right to leave their country and pick and choose where to go to and claim asylum. That's also the main argument from the ÖVP, which pushed hard to deport these people to their countries of origin (and is also the answer to rob in cal's question from above). The ÖVP's plan is to deport asylum seekers if the annual quota has been reached at 37.500 and if people still illegally set foot into Austria afterwards. Based on the Geneva convention and some EU treaties it is apparently possible to enforce this "upper cap" which Austria set and deport the surplus migrants, without breaking any law ...

In recent months it was upgraded to an almost airport-sytle border crossing in which incoming migrants are screened for weapons, fingerprinted, registered and then either transported to the German border (if they want to) or to centers in Austria (if they file for asylum here).



The border crossing and the staff there (police, military, aide groups, translators) are able to handle up to 12.000 migrants coming into Austria each day now. Currently, 2.000-3.000 are coming to Spielfeld each day - but between Sept.-Nov. there were 10.000 on some days (and we can assume that it will be the same this year).

Migrants coming in are now also more frequently screened for "economic migrants", which means people from Kosovo, Morocco, Algeria, etc. are immediately sorted out and brought back to Slovenia using a gateway in the border fence and handed over to Slovenian authorities. Of course they will try again later via the unsecured green border or other routes ...

The point is obviously that two wrongs don't make a right. Of course all right-wingers in this thread found it horrible that asylum seekers were being attacked in Woerden and that Reker was attacked in Cologne. But the fact that some countries, particularly Germany, have a problem with nasty far-right extremists doesn't render the negative consequences of mass immigration any less problematic.

The right-wing extremists are German/Swedish/Dutch etc. nationals. Unfortunately, we have to deal with them and the problems they cause. They will not go away. However, we don't necessarily have to deal with the problems of mass immigration,  because our countries are basically choosing to let these people come in and cause trouble. We could stop taking in migrants and one could reasonably assume that the problems these migrants would cause will also not happen. That is not the case with right-wing extremists, who are here already (even if taking in more migrants will obviously lead to more right-wing extremist violence, but I don't think that threat should be relevant for policymakers -- right-wing extremists who engage in violence should simply be punished).

There's a cap of 37.500 for the year 2016.

There were 7.000 asylum applications in Austria in January, which means the cap should be reached in May if current trends continue.

We'll see. I guess SPÖVP will be "flexible" enough to still let all others in if they see the hordes shoring up at the Slovenian border in the 10.000s, after authorities tell them "Du kommst hier net rein !" because the cap has been reached. Then they file for asylum, stay here for a few months, collect welfare and some of them might be deported. The rest remains and asylum applications will still hit 100.000 this year, despite a "cap".

Another silly Merkel comment:

... which is strange, because this is exactly what the German authorities are doing for months at the Bavarian border to Salzburg and Upper Austria. They are letting through 50-100 people per hour and if their "cap" has been reached, they let the asylum seekers wait for another day on the Austrian side of the border (or, if they crossed already into Germany and they turned out to be economic migrants, they are turned back to Austrian authorities).
