And looks like deaths are starting to finally rise in the UK. Is this just lag, or has the link actually been broken as so many have suggested. Our eyes will be on them these next few weeks.

The latest 7-day average by actual date of death is 30.4:

https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths

For point of comparison, there are around 1,500 to 1,600 deaths of all causes in the UK on a normal day.

I understand, I am still watching the trends.

Numbers in the Netherlands is are rising very fast and even in Germany the seven day incidence is slowly on the rise again as a result of Delta. Popular European vacation destination like Spain and Greece report major increases as well, mainly among youngsters. Young people not vaccinated yet are the main driver of recent spikes all across Europe. But to be honest, I can understand them having a desire to get out in nightclubs after a year of lockdowns.

Also, this was just a matter of time:

Our Greece vacation next week is still on regular schedule and as Covid recovered I don't need to do a test for either getting there or returning.

54,674 new infections reported in the UK today. That's... something.

The antivaxx demos in France are sickening (no pun intended). People using Nazi symbology, priests getting involved, just a general black hole of idiocy.

Seems to be rising much slower than the last wave. They were averaging over 450 deaths a day by the time they were into the 50k range of cases, right now it's >40 per day.

Though it is thought deaths could peak at over 100 a day, not great given the numbers vaccinated.

That's... totally irrelevant.

As long as the healthcare system is not at risk of collapse, and most people aren't dying (especially younger ones), no one should care.

Same reason we don't panic about influenza cases. Not a high risk to the system, and not many deaths.

What if a vaccine resistant variant develops?

To be fair, the odds that it would develop in the UK are pretty unlikely. It was mainly bad luck that it was the UK variant rather than the French or German variant, since there's lots of Covid in many countries. Plus I believe the variants develop in severe cases so if those are reduced hopefully the risk is reduced too.

What if Influenza again mutates into a variant similar to the Spanish Flu?

As for now, the data is clear. According to UK authorities, vaccines lead to a 4% hospitalization rate after infection, and an even far lower ICU rate, which is nothing to panic about.

Obviously, the media lives from panic and clicks, and that's why here in Austria I read the headline along the lines of VACCINATED MAN DIES FROM COVID, the first sentence of the article: He was 7x years old and very chronically ill

First day with no mask mandate in England today and despite the warmth, plenty of people were wearing masks.

Still tells you more vaccinations are necessary. So many cases will undoubtly result into several Long Covid diagnosis in the future, especially among young adults and childiren. That's at least problematic for folks who didn't have the chance for vaccination yet (those who refused at least make decision for themselves and take the risk). Furthermore, more infections increase the risk for new variants emerging that are potentially more dangerous. That's also why the virus must be supressed globally.

The current situation is not comparable to last year, I agree. But it's still worrisome. It's still not a good idea to let it run through.

Technically impossible on every level. You can only suppress temporarily at the cost of the economy and young people's lives and futures.

Whatever the epidemic does, the overwhelming view among senior scientists is that coronavirus is here to stay. The cold assessments came from the left and right of Boris Johnson at Monday’s Downing street briefing. From one side, Sir Patrick Vallance, the chief scientific adviser, said the virus “will be with us forever”. From the other, Prof Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, warned of Covid illness and deaths “for the rest of our lives.”

Also, why was no one talking about this with Influenza? We could get a Spanish Flu 2.0 any day because we let Influenza basically spread unimpeded, yet, no one worried about it.

Vaccinate as much as you can and let people live.

It's pretty sad, India essentially became a biological experiment in herd immunity over the winter, and the cost was very high

Are the UK out and about, or just the youngest.

It really affects the aged care facilities dramatically as we have found.

It’s possible...but we don’t know how long it will last. Although so far reinfection isn’t common, it could be without vaccines in the long run. All this does is buy India time.

Yes, it's been getting overheated in France too (though more about vaccines). Normally I'd attribute this to the French character, but it's plain that people the world over are fed up. Plus, if you still have to wear a mask and do contact tracing, people unsurprisingly wonder why they should be vaccinated if they are at little risk.
