This is a very apples-to-oranges way of looking at tank losses.  German never had an accounting of tank losses.  What they did was tank count netting for each formation after each time period. Tanks disabled in battle but repaired are not counted as losses.  This is critical since German tank production cost was high so it made economic sense to repair a lot of tanks that were disabled in battle.   This is one of many reasons why tank "losses" for the Germans were so much lower than USSR tank loss numbers since the USSR tank's production cost was a lot lower and it made less economic sense to invest in repairing tanks.  The Geman tank disabled/repair churn is actually quite high if read the operational logs of various German tank formations about how many of its tanks are being repaired at any point in time.

In this war, I suspect we have both factors going on.  The Ukrainian figures are mostly from their visual assessment of Russian tanks being disabled.  Sometimes these numbers are optimistic because many of those tanks can be repaired and operational effective at a low economic cost.

One way or another comparing visual counts of Russian tanks being disabled (many of whom are temperopriy) to German East Front "net lost" calculations is the perfect example of comparing apples to oranges.

Another reported Russian Naval Ship hit...

Quote
Ukrainian Bayraktar TB2 drones struck Russian-occupied Snake Island in the Black Sea again Saturday, claiming a kill on a Russian landing craft and a building on the remote Western Black Sea outpost.

Footage from the drone shows a missile hit on a Project 11770 Serna class landing craft at Snake Island’s boat ramp. The landing craft-utility (LCU) boat can be seen with a Tor surface-to-air missile system onboard, and likely a Russian Raptor-class patrol boat idling off the stern.

Another view of the assault on Snake Island. It looks like this video was captured from a drone.

Weirdest?  Well, it depends on which day you've watched Madison's version of “pobedobesie”

Lol, are they seriously using video game cutscenes in their military commercials?

I ran across some very detailed maps showing the current front lines. I appreciate that it identifies the specific units involved. Of course, such information isn't publicly revealed by the militaries involved and is incomplete at best. There are more maps (all of eastern Ukraine, Kherson front, etc.) elsewhere in the thread.

Yes Jomini of the West definitely has some of the best maps out there.

Got hooked on them early on in the war where Logical was posting them regularly as part of his daily updates...

Then when Logical stopped covering helped fill in the gap a bit, but Jomini went from daily maps to more irregular posting.

Either way, was just looking at the slide-set in great detail and for those not aware if you go his thread on twitter and then open up each individual map with a new browser can then zoom in and out for greater detail...

Thanks for boosting his works Storr for those watching the thread that have been less actively involved in monitoring details!   Smiley

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/06/opinion/biden-ukraine-leaks.html

Quote
As a journalist, I love a good leak story, and the reporters who broke those stories did powerful digging. At the same time, from everything I have been able to glean from senior U.S. officials, who spoke to me on condition of anonymity, the leaks were not part of any thought-out strategy, and President Biden was livid about them. I’m told that he called the director of national intelligence, the director of the C.I.A. and the secretary of defense to make clear in the strongest and most colorful language that this kind of loose talk is reckless and has got to stop immediately — before we end up in an unintended war with Russia.

Friedman claims that Biden opposes the intelligence leaks given to Ukraine.

This doesn't sound like the actions of the side expecting to win in a day.

It's actually quite interesting that Russian TV let this guy on

Don't know what to make of them letting someone grounded in reality talk about a "mobilization".

Russian military actions of "cultural vandalism" continue.

Although the charges of "genocide" levelled at the Russian regime arguably might not fully meet the typical standards applied, still destruction of historical heritage sites certainly does not help their case at all.

Quote
A national museum dedicated to an 18th-century philosopher revered by Ukrainians was destroyed in a Russian strike late Friday, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly video address.

The attack on the Hryhorii Skovoroda Museum near Kharkiv, the latest blow to Ukraine’s cultural heritage sites, was “beyond words,” Zelensky said.

Quote
This year marked 300 years since the birth of the philosopher. Skovoroda spent his last years in the building that became the museum, and he is buried there.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/05/07/russia-ukraine-war-news-putin-live-updates/#link-UZQYX33UFJGMLP2BKJQRPTUGOY

For many of us not very familiar with Skovoroda's background, here is a starting point of departure.

all things considered a fairly terrible graphic. Why is the M777 line in the middle of the arc? Is there some significance to that?

The label line is pointing to it. I thought it was pretty clear tbh.

Hungary looks set to put a stop to the European Union’s ban on Russian oil imports after leader Viktor Orbán compared the proposal to an atomic bomb.

Screw the EU then and each nation should unilaterally implement their sanctions .
