Judges in IL are elected. After 10 years they stand for retention. If they get 60% approval in the retention vote they are retained for another 10 years without opposition. If they fail to get 60% approval in the retention vote the seat is open for election in the next two-year cycle.

I wish other states adopted this.

but to be on topic, no...no politician is ever above democracy. even if 99% of the state likes you, you must go to an election to determine this.
