Not entirely surprising. RIP.
RIP.

Sigh of relief for Mike Johnson, as without this the House would need only 2 defecting Rs for a D preferred outcome to succeed after the NY-26 Special. This will keep it at the current status quo of 3.

What a crappy thing to say. "IT'S GOOD THIS GUY DIED BECAUSE IT SAVES REPUBLICANS FROM THEIR OWN SELF-DESTRUCTION!".
Like it or not deaths can impact the trajectory of such a closely divided House. This outcry is silly.

Of course death has an impact politically, but it's tacky to say that this is a sigh of relief for Mike Johnson. The phrasing was beyond just acknowledging the ramifications.
If your objection is merely over phrasing, then I don't really see how it deserves to be viewed with much seriousness at all. Tackiness would be saying it was a great thing in its political impacts. (Depending on the degree it would be very very likely to make the label look charitable).
If simply noting reality is tacky, we have bigger problems.

I never knew his dad was the Rep from the same district as him and Jr won the seat after the dad's death.

A very sad coincidence.

It stops being coincidental if they give the seat to Donald Payne III.

With this track record maybe he'd want to stay away from the seat

If they do, he'd be the new youngest member of congress. He's just 25.

Baraka allies are apparently pushing city council president LaMonica McIver, although the county party may need persuading. https://www.insidernj.com/baraka-organization-veteran-mciver-well-positioned-but-cd-10-situation-complex/?utm_campaign=shareaholic&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=socialnetwork

The son died in office at a younger age than the father -- 65 y.o. compared to 77.

If the trend depicted in MarkD's post continues, Donald Payne III will die shortly after his 53rd birthday--about halfway through his 14th full term, serving longer than his grandfather did, while dying before reaching the age he was when he was first elected.

Sure, but there's a time and a place...immediately jumping to the political ramifications of his death right after his death is announced, and in the same post wishing him rest in peace, is not the appropriate thing to do. The forum's name is "Talk Elections," I get it, but even then basic decorum and decency should be followed in not immediately discussing politics at news of someone's death (and I'll go a step further and say this applies to pretty much all politicians except perhaps the vilest of the vile).

Lmao. Tbf, Senior at least lived a pretty long and fulfilling life, it seems. 77 is a natural age of death.

Other candidates who are apparently planning to run: Linden (Union County) mayor Derek Armstead and state economic development official (and former Booker administration official) Darryl Godfrey. Deadline is this Friday.

McIver receives Union County Dem endorsement by a 5-4 vote over Armstead. https://newjerseyglobe.com/congress/mciver-defeats-armstead-by-one-vote-for-union-dem-endorsement/

Also mods, I think we could stand to merge this with the special election megathread?

Challenge to McIver’s petitions by Claybrooks and Armstead. McIver claims that her mother circulated all the petitions herself, but one of her own aides is disputing that and saying he also circulated petitions. The actual legal challenge isn’t about that - he seems to just be going rogue - but rather the (much weaker) theory that McIver’s mother just couldn’t have gotten that many signatures herself, though. I’m frankly not optimistic it’ll work, and I don’t think she should be thrown off just based on that, but the aide’s story is more serious. Final decision is in the hands of the SoS - and the deadline is Monday.

https://newjerseyglobe.com/campaigns/mciver-aide-admits-to-circulating-petitions-disputes-candidates-mother-got-1081-signatures-alone/

(Claybrooks’s petitions are also being challenged by McIver due to several signatures having the same handwriting, but that’s not going anywhere either.)

Update: hearing was reopened after that story emerged, but Claybrooks and Armstrong didn’t present any evidence related to it. Everyone’s still on the ballot.
