It would take a situation like the election of 1900 would have produced had Byran won. To reunify the party after 1896, when Byran won the nomination in 1900, he had Adlai Stevenson I, Cleveland's 2nd Vice President as his running mate. If Bryan had won in 1900 and been reelected in 1904 with the same ticket Adlai Stevenson I would have been our first three-term Vice President.
So in other words, we'd need to have a party have an unpopular presidential incumbent and despite an attempt by the next candidate to change direction, the next candidate loses the election, but not by so much as to make it unthinkable ey'd run again and the next time use the old vice president to heal party wounds. Only unlike Bran in 1900, ey'd actually have to win.
