Assume both of them were reincarnated. How would this election turn out? Discuss, with maps.

Washington would not be a Democrat.

The Federalists don't exist anymore, though, and since Lincoln was a Republican, I decided to make Washington a Democrat.

Washington likely would be a Republican on every economic and domestic issue, save slavery. Their were pro-Slavery Republicans at the time.

OK, I changed it. I made Washington a Republican and Lincoln a Democrat.

Washington was, in fact, a Hamiltonian, and friendly to the Federalist cause, which included increased State intervention in the economy. He'd probably hate the Democrats, but he'd not be friendly to laissez-faire Republicans, either.

I'm assuming Lincoln is the Republican in this scenario? (I changed the parties)

270-265, slight edge to Washington, but many states would probably be close.

This is what I get:

George Washington/??? (Rep): 311 EV, 53%
Abraham Lincoln/??? (Dem): 227 EV, 46%

Washington runs on a modern incarnation of his traditional Hamiltonianism: moderate economic populism/corporatism and staunch social conservatism, vs. what I'd consider to be Lincoln's basic free-market liberalism, and wins in a relatively close election.

Lincoln wins Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana on the basis of his historical connection to the region, parts of the mountain west on the back of his relatively liberal approach to economics, Maryland and D.C. on the strength of the black vote, and the Pacific coast owing to his social liberalism. Washington wins most of the South due to his social conservatism, along with Mormon territories, most Hispanic strongholds, and much of Appalachia because of his relatively interventionist economic philosophy.

There are a few things here that I'm dead-set on: Lincoln does not win Utah, because, if he carries over the historical attitude of Republicans of his day to Mormonism, he probably loathes it, and won it only in my FDR scenario because of historical ties of the region to the modern Party. Conversely, Lincoln fairly well cruises in the northwest, because the region was always very friendly to him. The South votes the way it does for obvious reasons.

I think people greatly underestimate the extent to which Washington excluded the laissez-faire Jeffersonians from his cabinet, and how much the Federalist system influenced his thinking.
