Let's give it a shot:

DEM-Jim Matheson/Gene Taylor

REP-Christopher Shays/Fmr. Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY)

A) We use Blue for the Democrats, red for the Republicans.
B) The Democrats run Mark Warner and Brian Schweitzer, but nonetheless run a "business-friendly" campaign.
C) A computer error occurs in Wyoming, and can't be overturned due to obscure state law reasons.
D) A hurricane hits Chicago on election day.

Well, this is alternative history, isn't it?

Then, of course, it is mostly the matter of southern realignment never having happened and the Dems emerging as a consistently populist and mostly southern party, with the northern constituencies deserting them (and blacks staying with the Republicans - the party of Civil Rights in this scenario). Some of the midwestern states would play out differently, though (perhaps, Illionois and Michigan would be swithched?) and the South would be darker red, methinks, since, bar a few traditionally Republican counties, only the blacks and the carpetbagger university types would vote Rep there.

Basically it requires the Civil Rights Bill to never have existed.

Democrats become (or stay) the party of states' rights, farmers, and Mormons.
