Quote
Chagos Islands Resolution

It is hereby the official position of the Republic of Atlasia that the Chagos Archipelago is a part of the Republic of Mauritius and not a British Overseas Territory. Additionally, the Senate officially recognizes that the displacement of Chagos Islanders by British authorities constituted ethnic cleansing.

Further, the Atlasian Senate requests that:

1) The United Kingdom immediately enters into talks with Mauritius concerning the sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago

2) All efforts are made by responsible parties to facilitate the immediate return of displaced Chagos Islanders and their descendants

3) The United Kingdom issue an official apology for committing ethnic cleansing against the Chagossians and for engaging in continued colonialism

4) The President of Atlasia re-assess our military alliance with the United Kingdom in light of their response to the preceding articles.

This Senate resolution will hopefully encourage a just resolution to the Chagos Islands / Diego Garcia dispute.

I'd prefer granting them independence but I can support this in its current form.

I'd prefer granting them independence but I can survive with this in its current form.

They have a population of around 3000 people.

If every 3000 people deserve an independent country, you would have three million countries in the world.

It's in every way a part of Mauritius, and still a remnant of British colonialism today.

I worry this would strain our relationship with the UK, and especially after likely pissing off France we might want to hold back on that. I'd like to hear from the SoS.

Well sometimes you're bound to piss off an ally. I'm sure you had an argument with your parents too someday (or with your partner). This isn't a declaration of war or something, it's an opinion.

Out of context: Trump did piss off Europe multiple times esp. Germany, we're still part of NATO and America is doing the bulk of the work in Ukraine in terms of aid.

I really don't think this is a major deal, esp. since IRL there is also criticizing of the UK based on this, not by governments but by organisations. But IMO governments should grow a backbone and not vote or take positions based on "who they're allied with".

This is definitely ethically the right position, and we should stand by it. It's a resolution, it doesn't do anything.

Turkey is also an ally within NATO. And many within NATO pissed them off for considering the Armenian genocide a genocide, or by considering occupation of Turkish Cyprus occupation. It's not unheard off...

Objecting, last thing we need is to throw a wrench into our relationships with other democracies when we need to focus on authoritarian regimes now. At the very least we should hear from the SoS first

Since no one offered themselves up to sponsor this bill I declare it off the floor.
