http://blogs.canoe.ca/davidakin/politicsndp/handicapping-the-ndp-leadership-race-a-surprising-top-tier-has-emerged/comment-page-1/#comment-35611

" it would be inaccurate at this stage to refer to Brian Topp as a frontrunner. In fact, he may not even be among the top tier candidates."

"A trio of candidates are doing very well and are clearly separating themselves from the pack when it comes to more first-ballot support. That trio is Thomas Mulcair, Peggy Nash and Paul Dewar. There is a bottom trio that is finding it difficult to get lots of first ballot support and, at this point, would be good bets for being dropped early in the balloting on March 24. That trio is Nathan Cullen, Niki Ashton and Martin Singh. Then there is a middle tier consisting of Romeo Saganash and Brian Topp. As I said, I’m piecing this snapshot together from sources who will not go on-the-record and are from  different campaigns and who are providing me information that needs a bit of deduction. So while I’m reasonably confident about this middle tier, if there were just two tiers, I would put Saganash in the top tier and Topp in the bottom tier."

Layton was born in Quebec, but did not represent a Quebec riding, and was considered by most to be from Toronto. If you know a simple way, without writing a paragraph, I can explain that Mulcair is the first real "Quebecker" to have a shot, then please, let me know.

Updated to reflect the lack of any pushback on the idea that Topp is no longer on top.

Still, I do need to see that movie; but I don't see the intensity? sorry. Don't get me wrong, I like Mulcair, but I just don't see what you are talking about.

One of your MP's has defected to our side. Her rationale is identical to mine.

He would fit right in, though, with other successful politicians we've had.

I'm not a dipper but my guess is:

Mulcair - 43,000
Nash - 20,000
Dewar - 19,000
Topp - 7,000
Others - 3,500

Back on '03, when I was a member of the NDP and on the provincial executive, we were all shocked that someone won a majority on the first ballot.

I know my endorsement was useless, but I'm un-endorsing the half-canadian who is running for NDP leader.

Did you oppose Dion's '06 candidacy for that reason? Of all the things to criticize Mulcair for... that should be near the bottom of the list.
I opposed Dion for a LOT of reasons. Even my grandmother, who had voted Liberal in every Federal or Provincial election in her entire life, refused to vote for Dion.

Unlike the US, you can be leader even if you are not born here. People choose to be Canadian. My father did. Mulcair should choose to be Canadian, and not leave a backup option.

He doesn't have to renounce his citizenship.

If he wants my support however, he will need to.
