Courtesy of @Atlas Politician.

Peru currently has a recession. It's yearly GDP is expected to drop over last year. It seems the social conflicts and political inestability has appalled foreing investment. Despite this, a lot of people don't notice the crisis as continues their lives as usual. There is some inflation, but nothing scary. It have heard that the areas most affected are in the interior of the country, so the Lima centered media focus on other issues.

Meanwhile, the media has focused in the last week on Alberto Fujimori's pardon. This is product of a decision by president Kuczynski years ago, trying to appease the fujimorist congress (it didn't actually help on that). Later, the decision was anulled thanks to IACHR protests. A week ago, the Tribunal Cosntitutional decided to restore the pardon, partly thanks to his current health condition. Meanwhile, IACHR (CIDH in spanish) continues protesting on the pardon. A reason for this is the 'forced sterilizations to indigenous women' case. It was suspended by peruvian courts some months ago, something than the IARCH protests.

On a bright side, Peru's ceviche has been entered the UNESCO Intagible Cultural Heritage List.
Also, the Christmas shopping season is starting. New Year comes too.
In Peru, doing piñatas of peruvian and foreing politicians and other personalities is a popular but recent tradition in peruvian New Year celebrations. Who should I select?

I imagine that Fujimori Snr is too old to make a proper comeback now, health issues aside.

He evidently remains a highly polarising figure, nonetheless.

And of course Congress is trying to stack the judiciary.
You could say that, but its a different situation than an american party packing the Supreme Court.

Actually, the conservative leaning peruvian Congress is trying to remove all the members 'Junta Nacional de Justicia, an independient organism which retifies and removes judges and prosecutors (this organism selects the member of the peruvian Supreme Court).

Well, a good part of the functions of the american Supreme Court are done in Peru by the Constitutional Court (an independient organism not part of the Judicial Branch). Also, Peru is a civil law country.

It's more of a game of interests than a game of ideologies. In this case, the problem was that the Junta Nacional de Justicia suspended the conservative leaning head of the peruvian prosecutor force (the Fiscal de la Nación, head of the Ministerio Publico), supposedly in an 'irregular' way with 'conflict of interest'.

Some in Peru say thay this is the country where 'one can never get bore'.

Government agents raid Peruvian President Boluarte’s residence in luxury watch investigation

Televised images swept Peru late Friday of government agents from an investigative team breaking into the president’s residence with a sledgehammer in a raid authorized by the judiciary at the request of the attorney general’s office.

Dina Boluarte is being preliminarily investigated for possessing an undisclosed collection of luxury watches since she came to power in July 2021 as vice president and Social Inclusion minister, and then as president in December 2022

Initially, she claimed ownership of at least one Rolex as a long-held possession acquired through “personal gains” since the age of 18, urging the media not to delve into personal matters.

Earlier in the week, Attorney General Juan Villena criticized Boluarte’s request to delay her appearance before the court for two weeks, emphasizing her obligation to cooperate with the investigation.

The government of President Dina Boluarte, through the Ministry of Health (Minsa), issued Supreme Decree No. 009-2024-SA, which classifies trans, transvestites and other gender identities as “pathologies”. This decree incorporates the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases) document, but in its outdated version from the 1990s, which causes gender identities to be referred to as diseases. This puts the LGBTIQ+ population at risk, and makes them vulnerable to forms of torture and degradation with supposed “therapies” or conversion practices.

Tbh, this doesn´t surprise me much, but it still appalls me.

Discuss.

Was this deliberate or the government was just being incompetent by using the old guidelines?

This is the decree, it seems deliberate:

Should I make this its own thread?

That would be good for engagement and terrible for quality discussion. Your call.

But why this move though? My impression was that Dina didn't actually believe in anything. Is she trying to pander to social conservatism to elevate her pitiful ratings or is she just genuinely transfobic?

The first, likely.

I made a thread on this, so let´s continue the discussion there.
