https://www.trtafrika.com/africa/comoros-president-cleared-to-seek-re-election-15950794Next month, there will be a presidential election in the Comoros, a small archipelagic nation in East Africa.
The largest opposition group is threatening to boycott this election. Comorian President Azali Assoumani first came to power in 1999 following one of the many coups that has rocked this Indian Ocean archipelago, and he has imprisoned many of his opponents.
Back in September, the Comorian courts rejected an appeal that sought to make it easier for Comorians living abroad to vote in the election. In practice, it is very difficult for them to do so.
Assoumani has been permitted to run for another term. In the January 14 election, he will face nine Supreme Court-approved opponents, including a medical doctor from the party whose former President was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 for "high treason".
