Keyes is black though

Although there's a big difference between "Alan Keyes" and "Barack Obama"

An anti-Iraq War Republican who wanted Kerry over Bush for foreign policy reasons but still wanted a Republican senate to keep a check on Kerry's fiscal and social policies?

there were a few Southern Illinois counties where Obama 2004 got a lower % than Carol Moseley-Braun 1998.

Clay: Obama 39.8%, Moseley-Braun 40.8%
Jasper: Obama 42.3%, CMB 44.7%
Wabash: Obama 41.9%, CMB 43.5%

Kerry was at 32.1%, 33.4%, and 29.2% in those 3 counties.

All 3 counties are in different TV markets too. Clay is on the Eastern fringe of the St. Louis market. Jasper is in the Terre Haute market. Wabash is in the Evansville market. Most of the counties that Keyes won were in the Evansville/Terre Haute market. So, I suspect that a combination of being pretty solidly Republican by default and not getting Illinois-centered local news helped Keyes there.

Obama won Chicago by an 88-10 margin in the same election where Kerry won 81-18. So the most Republican part of Chicago (Ward 41) went 53-47 for Kerry and 70-27 for Obama

anti-war/anti-Bush social conservative that decided a President Kerry with a Republican senate as a check was the optimal outcome.
