The yellow method seems to be a particularly Southern thing. Why?
Do Southerners hate the establishment so much that they don't want them to force any politician upon them?

Long history of powerful state Senates divvied up by county in the South, too, where President of the Senate is a very important role. In TX there's a good argument the Lt Gov is actually more powerful than the governor
