French mayor refuses to bury dead Roma girl in his city

A Roma baby girl has been denied a burial space by a French mayor, sparking outrage among activists.

The girl, who died on Christmas Day, reportedly of sudden infant death syndrome, was refused burial in Champlan, south of Paris.

The mayor said priority had to be given to taxpayers.

The mayor of nearby Wissous, Richard Trinquier, described that decision as "incomprehensible" and said that he would offer a grave.

The girl's family lived in a camp in Champlan.

The mayor of Champlan, Christian Leclerc, was quoted by Le Parisien newspaper as justifying the decision by saying that his town was running out of burial space and that "priority is given to those who pay local taxes".

I got that.  My point was that unlike the Shoah, the Porajmos has always struggled to obtain recognition to the extent that many people think only Jews were victims of the Holocaust.

I find it quite bizarre that a concession for a spot on the local cemetery somehow passes the mayor's desk to begin with. Even in a small municipality like this one, this can hardly be standard practice, can it?

In France, a cemetery concession is a contract between the municipality and the buyer, so it must be signed by the mayor or the relevent deputy mayor.
