Yes the GOP would likely have run ads in the South insinuating Cuomo had mafia ties.

Dukakis was also an "ethnic" candidate and son of immigrants, but there are too few Greek Americans and there doesn't seem to be really be a Greek stereotype.

Irish Americans really aren't that "ethnic."  They've been in the US longer, came from the British Isles and spoke English. And you don't need to cast Irish American actors to play Irish American characters as in the case with Italian actors and characters, any generic white American (or even Brit who can do a good American accent) will do.

They emphasized Dukakis being a "Massachusetts liberal" more than anything else but there was some insinuation of his "foreignness" as well.
