The first Democratic primary debate of the 2008 cycle was in April 2007, while the first GOP debate was in May 2007.  So we're likely to be only 2.5 years away from the first 2012 primary debate.

Actually president primary talk would atleast start fall 2009.

Anybody planning to run I would guess is already thinking about it.

Notice how we have not heard much for Pawlenty as of late???

He's my dark horse candidate assuming a McCain loss.

If Governor Palin decides to run for the Republican Nomination in 2012, victory in the Iowa Caucuses is within her grasp. If she wins the Republican Nomination in 2012, a victory in the 2012 Presidential Election against President Obama is not within her grasp. Thus, her best option I find for Governor Palin is to sit out the 2012 Presidential Election cycle.

Someone's a bit testy over the imminent Obama victory.

Huckabee will probably win it again. He's my current favorite to win the GOP nomination, as scary as it sounds. It will be him or Romney.

No. I'd support Romney over Huckabee. As I've said many times, I love Huck, but his economics and social views are probably opposite of mine. Given the choice between Huck, Romney, and Palin, I'd be undecided. I certainly hope we have more choices than that.

When I say "favorite," I mean I think he has the best chance right now if it was a Romney/Huckabee/Palin ticket. Although Palin and Huck appeal to the same wing of the party, so Romney might win with the moderate voters.

Jindal won't win.  After all, he is a Muslim/Hindu/Yid foreigner.

Well, I think Huckabee would win over Palin in the battle anyway.

Lets say that this is the fight:

Huckabee
Romney
Frist
Jindal
Giuliani
Keyes
Paul

Who would likely be the top 3?

Huckabee--definitely in the top 3. He and Romney are locks and already have a base.
Romney--see above. He'll be the best funded out of them all.
Frist--too tied to the Bush years. He won't run, and if he did, he wouldn't win.
Jindal--I like him, but too extreme right. He could make a solid run, though.
Giuliani--Could attract all the moderates in this race, and he wouldn't have McCain to take them from him.
Keyes--crazy.
Paul--will get the same number of voters as last time. He only has a small appeal.

Yeah, other than Frist and Keyes, that will likely be the lineup. Could Huckabee and Romney be forced to run together? (with either or on the Prez and VP)

Jindal should position himself as a GOP Obama.

Jindal should position himself as a GOP Obama.

The problem with that is the fundamental makeup of the parties.  The GOP generally doesn't like "Obama's".

Well...
Romney, Palin, and Huckabee will all be the frontruners going into it, with a slight lead for Romney. I think that if Senator John Thune (SD) decides to enter the race, he would have an excellent chance of being the "Huckabee" of 2012, and win Iowa.
