That is the first time I have ever heard that term and I cannot imagine anything like that happening in the UK on an election night...

They do the same thing in Denmark and Norway too. I've never understtood the point of having a debate between the party leaders after the polls have closed but in some countries it's an important part of election night tradition.

In Sweden party leaders always go the studio of SVT election coverage to get interviewed. They're never all there at the same time though, and it's more of a casual interview than any sort of debate. Still, I suspect that is a bit weird seen from a British perspective since you'd never see the Prime Minister appear in the BBC studio at election night to be personally interview by David Dimbelby.

CSU candidates easily ahead in all 4 Munich districts, despite the surge in turnout.

First official results have come in:

https://www.bundeswahlleiter.de/bundestagswahlen/2017/ergebnisse/bund-99.html

It's like on CNN when the Democrats are initially leading in South Carolina and the Pubs in Virginia. Tongue

Daggendorf. Weilheim, and Rottal-Inn are easy CSU holds.

BTW, Waldeck was a SPD gain from 2013 - not that it matters with the alternative vote.

Wow, it's the first time I hear of this tradition and it's amazing.

The most (in)famous elephant round probably convened in 2005, when an obviously tipsy Chancellor  Schröder threw his naked spite and glee towards Merkel because her CDU had been heavily overpolled whereas his SPD performed waaay better than the polls had predicted.
He was roundly criticized afterwards.

I just came home. Is there a map of results by municipality or region? I'm sorry if this was posted already.

This is the only map I can come up with:

http://wahl.tagesschau.de/wahlen/2017-09-24-BT-DE/karte_embed.shtml?version=66878 (5 districts by now)

http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/bundestagswahl-2017-alle-ergebnisse-im-ueberblick-a-1167247.html (no results yet)

Those are not final results yet, only current vote count.

Here's the official vote count, currently after 7 (out of 299) completely counted constituencies.

I don't see the difference, on their map - they have the same 7 seats as projected.

Official map, but seems to lag behind slightly:

Thank you, Hades and Oryxslayer! Just had a watchparty with quite some Germans, who weren't too pleased with the results... unlike me. Merkel punished, SPD punished, AfD strengthened even more than expected, FDP back. Just a pity that Die Linke didn't perform a bit better and the Greens a bit worse.

I also find the denunciation of Gauland and his antics quite heartening. The way Göring-Eckardt responded to his BS in the party leaders' debate... that's really the way to go. Meuthen did a good job though.

Seem to indicate a fairly large swing from Linke to AfD since 2013 and almost as large as the number of votes it got from SPD.

LOL. This is so surreal. A party literally begging not to join a coalition and wishing the new governing parties good luck is something I have never seen before...

Bloomberg says.  ARD indicates that AfD might come in first in Saxony.   Not sure if they mean Saxon or Saxony-Anhalt

If CSU refuses to joining a coalition with Greens the would that leave us with no possible majority ?  In such a case will there be another election or will SPD join CSU/CSU "for the good of the country" ?

They mean Saxony, but the results skew rural at the moment, because in Saxony we just know about muncipalities that are fully counted.

AfD is ten points behind CDU in Sachsen-Anhalt.

More likely is that negotiations get dicey, but "The good of the county" argument will be used to get the FDP and the Greens together. The SPD base has something like a -30 approval of Merkel right now, and would never approve another Grand Coalition - Schultz and the party are commited to this.
