I would like to make an amendment;

3. F.L. 13-1 (the "Needless Celebrations Removal Act") and F.L. 12-11 (the "Abolition of Martin Luther King Day Act") are hereby repealed.

I accept it as friendly (if I can do that).

Al didn't offer it as friendly.

And if he had, I would object to it being accepted as friendly. I'm ready to defend F.L.13-1. Grin I've no problem with reintroducing MLK.

I was afraid that would be the case, though I didn't know for sure. Tongue
The "friendly" problem could have been dealt with easily - just get him to precisize (sp?) that it's friendly, but as I said, it would get objected to anyhow so it doesn't matter.

So... the vote on Al's amendment opens tomorrow (or possibly late tonight, my time). For after that I'm introducing an amendment:
Depending on how the vote goes, either:

To include another section "F.L. 12-11 (the "Abolition of Martin Luther King Day Act") is hereby repealed", or to amend Al's new section to read just that.

Also, I have a friendly amendment NOW to remove those silly a's and b's and just have two sections 1 and 2.

In that case, I'll accept it as friendly. I wasn't really sure how to go about numbering it. Tongue

Senators have 24 hours to object.

Aye. The more celebrations the better. Tongue
Well in that case...

maybe I should introduce the following amendment:

"Every day not currently a federal holiday is declared Atlasians Are Teh Awesome Day.

Atlasians Are Teh Awesome Day is to be a federal, school, and bank holiday."

Vote count:

Aye 5 (Lewis, Jas, PiT, Sensei, Al)
Nay 2 (Happy, Dwtl)
yet to vote 3 (Torie, Bacon, Andrew)

EDIT: Actually, as Bacon hasn't sworn in yet, the amendment has been passed.

So, Dwtl. Want to introduce an amendment to reword that section 3 so that it introduces a new holiday called Civil Rights Day instead?

The XVth Amendment is not related to the modern Civil Rights movement and was not a Black achievement. Therefore, while I understand and even share the reasoning behind not wanting to single out MLK like he and Malcolm X and Booker Washington were the only relevant Blacks that ever lived on US soil, I must oppose this amendment.
This being Atlasia and not America, maybe we could keep the MLK date but call it Demrepdan Day. After all, he was the only relevant Black ever active in Atlasia. Grin (Unless I'm forgetting somebody, in which case I apologize.)

The date of February 3rd shall hereforth be a national holiday referred to as "Civil Rights Day"

Nay.

-I don't like making lots of new holidays
-I don't really care about MLK Day. Though renaming it "Civil Rights Day" may be wise.
So the veto's really about WWII, and adding MLK was just not enough to sway you?

Ahem. Anyways.

Anyway, I call for a vote to override the veto.

The vote is on the override motion. Please vote aye, nay or abstain.

(Note: I'll get to updating the noticeboard and opening debate on three new bills tomorrow morning, my time.)

This veto has been successfully overriden.

It doesn't matter btw, but
Tally on Veto Override

Aye: 8 (Torie, Al, Happy, PiT, Bacon King, Jas, AndrewCT, Sensei)
Nay: 2 (DWTL, Lewis)

is slightly incorrect: I abstained. Amounts to the same thing, though, really.
