I won’t name the school, and certainly not the teacher, but I just found out today that my fifth grade teacher, a man who taught at that school since 1969, had been caught watching pornography on a school computer, some of it containing children (not exactly child porn, not nude but none the less incredibly inappropriate pictures of children-you get the jist), and was promptly fired. According to what I have been told, he was looking at images of young girls mainly. They found them on his computer, the teachers’ lounge computer, and in the computer lab. I had heard rumors for two or three weeks, but I pretty much heard from a friend of my moms who still has younger children at the school (a small private school, going from preschool to eight grade) that the rumors are indeed true.

I had him as my 5th grade teacher in 2007-2008; while he was my homeroom teacher, he was first and foremost a history teacher. He pretty much openly favorited me; I did not try to be a “teachers pet” and he never did anything that in hindsight to me seemed “weird", so while I am not disturbed about what he thought about me, I can't help but wonder about what he thought of the other students. I always considered him to be one of my favorite teachers, along with both of my eight grade teachers and my sixth grade teacher. Out of all the teachers, he was by far the longest employed and most respected teacher, and was a pillar in the community and the church attached to the school. It’s so stunning to see a 45 year career just end like this.

You think you really know a person Tongue.

It's funny how the people thought to be weird are the most normal. Of all the teachers, it had to this guy. Never in a billion years would I guess it was him.

Absolutely disgusting. It's really tough when you think you know someone and then their darker side comes to light.

Apparently he admitted he had a problem; I hope he will face his demons. There was an odd side to him: he never told us his age. He told us he was turning 60 in 2008. He told my friend's older brother he was 65 in 1998. I once asked another teacher who was tutoring me if she knew out of curiosity: not a single staff member knew for sure. It just seemed like an odd thing, and now it is even more strange.

How can porn have children but not be child porn? Was it a nudist site? Obviously, naked pictures and work are incongruous.

No, I was told that they were just images of children in inappropriate poses and clothing that children should never be wearing. It was basically child porn, but he could not be arrested for what he was viewing.

I sympathize.  I had something similar happen to me and this was with a music teacher I took private lessons from.  Nothing inappropriate even happened between us, altho I remember him being kindly and showing some interest in my non-musical pursuits as well.  However, he was caught up in a similar controversy quite a few years later.

I had a college professor of psychology that was canned for being too vulgar in her intimate vocabulary and for apparently viewing lesbian pornography on the school's computer in her office as well as inappropriate advances toward one or more of her female students.  I don't remember if she ever faced criminal charges, but I do know she was promptly dismissed from the school.  Even in a small town in Oklahoma, the reddest state in America, you have these idiots in the classroom.  I feel sorry for the students because this professor was not attractive in the least.

Even in OK? Why would you expect any less in OK, Republican states, or small towns?

They're not the first place people think of especially in the small town factor that everybody knows everybody.

There has also been a story in a small town just east of OKC where a school teacher was arrested last year for taking nude pictures of some of her young female students and sending them to a professor in Pennsylvania.  Perhaps some of our Western PA posters might have heard of this in their news.  The professor in Pennsylvania was sentenced to life, I believe, and she will be sentenced sometime this Spring.

Life in prison for looking at some pictures? Crazy.

I'm still not seeing the connection. Do you think Republicans are less likely to enjoy kiddie porn?

Well, Republican states tend to be more religious than Democratic states, though that's debatable, and small towns in deep red states are usually even more conservative and religious than the big cities, so you wouldn't automatically suspect a deep red, small town citizen to be a predator.  I'm not saying it can't or doesn't happen, but be honest, when you see a child predator, is the first thing you think of is he or she might be from a small town in rural Oklahoma or Kansas?

Everyone has their failings.  Doesn't sound like he's a predator, and while this rightly lessens your respect for him, you can still appreciate the good things about him.  It's commonplace these days to think of anyone who is attracted to children as being nothing but irredeemable scumbags.    But many are just regular people who have a problem, more often than not harmless and don't act anything out.

Yes because if there are two things that never, ever go together, it's child predators and religion.

Something similar happened at my high school. One of the teachers that I didn't have, but I knew, had a student work on a computer problem for him and he found child pornography. Yeah, its disturbing no matter which way you look at it.

Wow, yeah. Life sentences should only be given for 1st degree murder (and even then, not automatically and always with parole after 20 years).

It would indeed be very good to start viewing *passive* pedophilia (ie the fact of being attracted to children without actually doing anything to fulfill these instincts) as a mental illness to cure rather than as a capital sin to punish. Maybe if the stigma toward this decreased, this would allow more people to seek help and thus significantly reduce child abuse.

That said, viewing and possessing photos should not exactly be tolerated IMO.

Yes - very similar to this - my music instructor/band master at school. Not so much private lessons in my case, but a couple of times where the other students in my lesson couldn't attend (instrumental classes, being run at the same time as normal classes and you were excused from your normal class to attend, except if you had an exam, for example).
