I'd like to apologize for my state.

I second that notion. A lot of the citizens here are kinda crazy about lazy people. During class one day, my hi school gym teacher spent the class talking about how money was taken out of his paycheck to give money to lazy non-working welfare fiends. Then I explained to him how that money also goes to funding his job, the roads he drives on to get to that job, his Medicare, and his social security.

There are senses of 'mean' that do work here, like the one that means 'parsimonious to a fault and/or for all the wrong reasons'. The common North American one is indeed kind of childish.

More like Al Sharpton's.  But learning How the Other Half Lives in any state is a sad journey. I will never forget driving through Libby MT after a very nice trip to Glaciet National Park. Poor white people are not common where I live, so it made an impression. It's revolting either way of course. In a better world we'd all be lighting candles rather than cursing the darkness.

Ugh.  Georgia is doing its best to become a Republican utopia.. complete with a burgeoning underclass of poors that will cause revenues to fall further and the state's sprawly infrastructure will become impossible for them to afford.

There are a multitude of reasons for them to have a healthy safety net outside of the obvious moral ones.  Spite and general meanness seem to run the GA GOP.
