This is actually the second plane which has been shot down in Ukraine recently, after the Russians had reportedly destroyed a Ukrainian jet fighter yesterday evening. Maybe the Ukrainians decided to strengthen their air defences and got a little too nervous.
Which raises the question why civilian passenger planes are still allowed to fly in that area in the first place...
Well obviously it's the government's responsibility to warn the public if they're just going to start shooting down planes at random.
