A RESOLUTION

To reaffirm Taiwan's security and give China the what-for

Be it resolved by the Senate of the Republic of Atlasia assembled,

SECTION I.

1. This resolution may be referred to as the Reaffirmation Of Commitments and Response Objecting to China's Recent Oppugnant Conduct (ROCROCROC) Resolution.


SECTION II.

Whereas, the Senate of the Republic of Atlasia finds the following:

1. that the People's Republic of China (or "China") has long exhibited antagonism toward the Republic of China (or "Taiwan");

2. that China has recently escalated this aggressive behavior with the clear aim of intimidating Taiwan and its inhabitants;

3. that China's recent aggression has taken the form of military exercises addressed toward Taiwan, repeated cyberattacks on its major cities, naval blockades, and verbal declarations of further military intent, among others;

4. that Taiwan and its people are seriously endangered due to the escalation of military threats by the Chinese government, and that China's actions continue to destabilize the region as a result;

SECTION III.

Therefore, be it resolved:

1. that the Republic of Atlasia:
   a. Continues to work against all attempts to subvert democratic values and self-determination,
   b. Reaffirms its full commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the people of Taiwan,
   c. Formally condemns China's actions as detailed in Section II,
   d. Recommends that China cease its belligerence toward Taiwan immediately, and
   e. Stresses its commitment to peace first and foremost and its current readiness to employ diplomatic channels toward a resolution of this conflict;

2. that the Senate of the Republic of Atlasia recommends swift prioritization of diplomatic measures toward this goal by the President, the Secretary of State, and the National Security Council.

Going to be a quick stopover, folks. I will be indisposed for the next forty-eight hours or so, so any questions or amendments are very welcome and will be seen after that time period.

This was originally conceived as a response to the Taipei cyberattack. That it has since expanded to encompass several other much more severe actions speaks volumes about China’s belligerence toward Taiwan, and it is high time we actually did something to mediate this conflict before the region destabilizes completely.

So the resolution has three very simple parts: we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the safety of Taiwan, we condemn these unacceptably aggressive actions, and we open diplomatic channels expressly dedicated to trying to defuse this conflict. I think this is wholly consistent with both Sestak’s previous statements on Taiwan and the FP course that Sev and Transit are taking, and the ball will of course be in their court to carry out the spirit of this resolution. I urge my fellow Senators to cast an Aye vote for human rights and for the self-determination of the Taiwanese people. No more Hong Kongs; no more Tibets or Xinjiangs. Not unless we have anything to say about it.

I'm going to invoke UC here so that we can get this done with ASAP. I really don't see any particularly controversial provisions here, and I'd like us to channel our diplomatic efforts before the PRC threatens Taiwan's security.

I'd prefer we use diplomatic routes to try to resolve this, a war with China is really not in our interest, and despite being one of the most neo-con people in this game, I warned against it from the start. Not objecting, but I don't just think demanding that China do X is really a smart approach, honestly, at this point, the only way this can probably be averted would be to withdraw Taiwan recognition and return to the One China Policy which mostly kept peace in East Asia. China was never going to tolerate a Taiwan recognition, and this should've been noted at the time.

While I understand the motivation behind such a move, given the highly tense environment in which this crisis is playing out, I believe that pushing for a UNSC seat would only cause further provocation and escalate the situation needlessly. We have recognized the PRC's claim to that seat since the 70s, and even though we recognize ROC independence now, such a move would be seen as an attack on China's power, something we want to avoid. Pushing for a UNSC seat for the ROC, additionally, will not help the ground situation improve for the Taiwanese people in the opinion of the State Department.
